  2. I do wonder if all this "2 pack lasts 10years "ect is relevant for canal use. Yes it may last that long, yes it might offer better resistance to diesel. However its still going to get scraped off by that thoughtfully placed supermarket trolley or some other detritus and once that's happened its just like cheap bitumen!! It ain't there anymore and the hull is unprotected. But the owner has the false sense of security that it will last 10 years!!! Ours was out of the water every 2 years, I wanted to see what the hull condition was in that timescale so that potential areas of corrosion could be nipped in the bud.

  12. Sarina Young? ***** Edited to add that what I provided is not what CaRT have sent other people but information taken from the old BW website 5-6 years ago by a web crawler I had developed. The BW spreadsheet had info not relevant to Alan's request (i.e. several more columns) which I removed.

  13. There are a number of reasons to go for Diesel-Electric drive in surface vessels (I have experience in RN ships using it) but I can't really see any that would apply in a narrowboat, and none worth pursuing once cost is factored in. Perhaps the thought of silent running is the attraction but, if you can't get a good enough result from pretty mainstream gear, a cocooned diesel would surely get close enough at a fraction of the cost of Electric propulsion? Beta do those off the shelf too, and their disadvantages (chiefly access based) would be nothing compared to those arising from the complex systems in prospect. I can''t see logic in running a main diesel for propulsion at a fraction of its capacity and then running another smaller quieter diesel once you've stopped so you can charge your batteries. Particularly as the 'special cases' I'd see for narrowboats to be silent are almost exclusively when they're moored up! As for any fuel savings, you would have to do some galactic mileages before any fuel savings would pay for extra engines/generators/batteries/control systems. Let's face it, 1-1.5 ltr/hr isn't exactly gas guzzling as it is! Interesting project perhaps, but I think I'd read about someone else's experimental exploits and spend my own money on what works. Fun subject to kick about though and some interesting responses too, so please don't think I'm having a go! I'd love to see it - I just wouldn't want to buy and run it.

  14. Woodstock. I haven't ever sold any thing I have made.I give them away to family and friends and my wife uses some for pressies. If I get a commission I have been known to suggest delivery one evening in the pub! It's more fun and very socialable working these days for no financial gain. I've had more than four decades working!

  15. Every 2 yrs which also allows you to check the adenoids. Mind you, only had the boat for 2 yrs so we will see how that one pans out in the fullness of time.

  16. Here is a list of the 'Functional Locations of BW/CaRT's 10,000 principal assets. It is 5-6 years old so there might be some changes. (One very minor point - seems that -000- does not exist anywhere in the spreadsheet which indicates that -001- represents the waterway between zero and one km from datum (i.e. the point on the canal or river that is used as a start point for measurement).

  17. IMO (novice & a WB owner) there are very few disadvantages once you get your head around you aren't able to cruise the entire system. But there are things that need to be considered..... We travel slower than narrow boats due to the amount of wash we cause Doing locks takes us longer as all 4 gates need to be opened and closed and we can't share locks on the canal system Some marina's charge more for a pump out if your a WB Our insurance costs more as the value & size of the boat is greater (in most instances) than a same length narrow boat A Thames visitor license costs substantially more as it is charged by sq footage Painting & blackening cost more - crane in & outs are limited to yards able to do it and cost more Mooring spots can be a bit more limited in certain areas, as we need to ensure we aren't making it difficult for other boats to navigate past us you need to be prepared to pull over to let narrow boats past as they can travel faster than you - well we do anyway & of course you need to have a rather thick skin to deal with the few "miserable ol gits" who will happily share their distaste with you & their negative comments about WB's on some discussion forums. However, in real life out on the cut, you very rarely actually receive any negativity about having a WB Enjoy your space & proper bed

  18. Every two to three years in our case, but a lot depends on the water you are afloat in -- clean water, no floating diesel, blacking lasts a lot longer. And the Lockie has it right IMO

  19. That's a good point. I would be against banning people who are occasionally disruptive. But where there is a track record of the same individuals, again, and again hijacking the discussion to indulge in their own personal spats, I would say ban them. If they want to start their own discussion group elsewhere, fair enough.

  20. It's not as though this is the only thread where sensible, useful information for boaters is obscured by disagreable rubbish. If you can't be bothered to do anything, there will be more examples. It's not a question of deleting stuff. It's a question of banning people wo post things which are disagreeable to the point tzhey derail legitmate and useful discussions.

  21. Better add £15k pa to the budget for that, and of course food, say another £1k

  22. Contrary to what some people seem to think, not every question is about CCers. The OP says he has an online mooring, which is going blocked in by stoppages -- so the only sensible answer so far is to ask CRT.
