Shooting of liveaboard boater Jo Cox MP

I think when a year or two has passed and people look back on these times and perhaps study them with the benefit of historical perspective it will become clear that public opinion has been horribly perverted by some very unpleasant people. There are quite 'nice' people I know who hold some shocking opinions. The likes of Farage and columnists in 'family' newspapers have legitimised the holding of the most hate filled attitudes. Its not that difficult to turn people into monsters. People in my own family who used to be on the 'reasonable right' are now, frankly, almost racist neo Nazis. Thing is that they still think they are reasonable.

You evidently have a Bee in your bonnet about this subject, but please refrain from expressing political opinions here. It's really neither the time nor the place.

White Helmets. I think that if you scratch deep enough you will find firstly politics and secondly unsavoury characters funding and influencing practically everything, sometimes you have to be pragmatic to get the cheques. Who funds our political parties? who has to negotiate with evil people to be allowed into wicked countries? Does our government talk to warmongering idiots in secret? Have any of us ever been polite to people we would rather shove into the cut because it suits our needs?

So far as I can see the work they do is for the general good and that's what counts.

Something looks odd. Her memorial fundraiser is collecting for 'The White Helmets'. Is this organisation not a political interference group installed by the USA to destabilise a country? And if they have had $23,000,000 from the US government then why do they need charitable donations from the British people?

A quick google found this:

"As to be expected the US, and presumably UK, will currently be funding and arming certain rebel groups in Syria in an attempt to get power for pro-western friends and allies and disrupt Russia's agenda.

But after Jo Cox's tragic death, the GoFundMe page set up in her honour names The White Helmets as one of the 3 charities it supports. But there is plenty of information on the internet, and much of it seems looks to the untrained eye very credible, that The White Helmets is a USA and poss UK funded organisation that certainly is neither neutral and doesnt look wholly peacekeeping. Its an NGO formed by a british ex-army man according to many sources, including this youtube vid, and allegedly bankrolled to the tune of $23M by the US govt:

So on one hand i would have thought Jo Cox had good reason to look hihgly upon The White Helmets, but on the other i'm not sure i want any of my money going to them so won't be contributing."

Lots of "possibles" and no facts there. No one has to contribute if the charities are not for them of course.

So many people want to politicise this thread and start an argument.

It disgusts me.

Please let's focus on what matters. A peaceful women going about her MP duties has been cruelly murdered leaving a young familly.

I don't think anyone denies that the White Helmets are funded by the aid agencies of several Western governments. And a quick Google of my own suggests that the anti-White Helmets material out there is coming from pro-Assad groups (such as Hands off Syria Sydney, who produced the video linked to). Far from looking 'very credible', to me it has a distinct whiff of propaganda and conspiracy theory about it.

(Sorry to add to the drift into political territory again, but this amounted to a very serious accusation - that Jo Cox's Fund is supporting a US-backed 'political interference group' rather than a bona fide search and rescue organisation - and I thought some sort of response was appropriate.)

Are so in your opinion the ends justify the means, providing of course they agree with your sentiments. Perhaps the people referred to as your family in a previous post as neo nazi racists consider that it is ok until their objective is achieved, then they too can revert to being normal.

I'm going to step in here and say that this is a thread that originally sought to commemorate a young woman who has been killed doing her duty as an MP. She has left a very young family and husband, who are bereft without her.

The consensus across the political spectrum is that Jo Cox was a committed humanitarian who had the respect all of MPs across all political parties in the House. Using this thread to speculate and attempt to denigrate her work and causes does not sit well or reflect well on any of us. If you wish to contribute, be respectful, please, not use the thread to squabble with others. Thank you.

This is an absolutely terrible thing to have happened to a really committed Parliamentarian trying to serve their community. Most politicians from across the political spectrum seem to have indicated this was a very exceptional woman, even if their own position was wildly different from hers.

The forum owner has taken the decision that politics will in future not feature, so it seems entirely correct to me to do as Wriggly says, and keep this thread clear of any attempt to make a political point from it.

There are, of course, many other places on the Internet where you can do this if you want to.

RIP Jo.

I hope that this post won't be seen in any way disrespectful or political. It's just a bit of background of the girl, and reinforces my admiration for her.

Apologies if a link has already been posted, and apologies for my inability to link properly.
