Bettie Boo
So glad there was a happy ending for you We trained ours to come to when we whistled. Whistle = his favourite treat and since it was the only time we gave him a treat it didn't take very long for him to learn

FidoDido
Good news!, Prob with canal though is that if the cat falls in, it can't get out. Suggest having a strip of carpet , hooks at top which you can dangle from the piling or boat into water either end of the boat. Or even prop a tree branch from water to bank. Gives em sommat to climb up. Couple of times I've heard a splosh and had to go fish a very disgruntled cat out.. Seems when it's dark and the water is still and calm, cat thinks it looks solid and jumps.

Funny you should say that! That's just what our girl cat has just done, following up half an hour later with the biggest (dead) mouse I've seen in a long time. Don't you just love them?
