New Build - Which Telly Aerial?

Hiya,

Well I have to start thinking about drilling more holes in the roof, this time for aerials. The radio ones are sorted, it's just the TV aerial now & I'm stuck as to which type to go for, I've checked with a local aerial specialist & he tells me that a lot of the local boaters use the Maxview Gazelle in restricted signal areas. All fine & dandy, however after reading an article on it on CWDF from last year, I'm not so sure, I currently have on my current boat one of those elliptical jobbies with fins sticking out the sides (can't think of the name ATM) coupled to an amplifier, but it's not great unless the line of sight is very good.

Are there any better alternatives available or would I be better off getting a standard domestic aerial to hook up to an amplifier?

Cheers.

Bought this a year or more ago - best money ever spent on an aerial. Works everywhere, even next to steel bridges. Get 100% strength and quality on my Humax. Bought from Maplins for around £55 but not sure if they're still doing it.

Have a look at this http://www.aerialsandtv.com/touringaerials.html

This guy is a regular hire boater and takes a DM log aerial with him when he goes on holiday.

We have the short version of the DM log and only once failed to get decent reception, we don't have a long pole either, just a "loft pole" on the roof attached to the boarding plank.

Also I never drill the roof

I haven't drilled a hole in my roof for my ariel either but only because a I can't be bothered. I've just bodged it through the pidgeon box and that's good enough for me.

However, if you like things tidy then drilling the roof and routing the cable behind panels to a convenient point has got to be the right thing to do if you like things done proper.

Is there a reason why you've mentioned you've not drilled the roof ? It sounds like you're just as lazy as me !

Depends if you want something that looks neat and compact or something that works.

An external terrestrial/satellite connection box can be fitted unobtrusively outside.

Then just plug in a log periodic (full size one) on a pole for freeview.

Avoid having to use an amplifier if possible.
