Moving my boat - by road, sorry!!

I don't have the time or experience to attempt this trip on water so, at the end of April, I'd like to put the boat on the back of a truck and have it taken from Victoria Quays, Sheffield to Kings Marina, Newark.

One company has quoted £500 for a hiab or £350 for a standard lorry (requiring a crane at both ends).

Is this a good, bad or normal price?

If your craft will fit on a Hiab - go for it!

The cost of arranging separate craneage will make your eyes water!

Edited to add, - Although I'd strongly suggest you make sure the transport operator is fully insured (for your losses) - and that you organise where it will be lifted out, and back in (You will not lift in in at King's - there's no suitable jetty) - so you'll need to explore an alternative location, and boat the last few yards/miles.

Looking at CanalPlanAC it's about 5 days to move by water. If you can't afford the time, then it would be cheaper to get someone else to rather than via road.

Just in caae you missed it - you cannot get a 'lift in' at Kings Marina - you will need to arrange to get dropped off at Newark Marina and then 'cruise' the last mile.

As you are coming from a foreign county you will need to be flying the "yellow duster" to inform Customs & Excise of your arrival, Call up the marina on Channel 74 & on arrival into Kings you wil be escorted to the 'bonded jetty' to await your searches and medical examination - we dont want any scurvy or yellow fever thankyou.

lolol! Thanks for the heads up Alan clapping.gif

The boat already has a current BSS, thanks Chalky

I'm not really comfortable with someone else on board at the moment, the boat is OK for me to stay in but it still needs a good dose of nails internally and hence a little scruffy (I wouldn't let my lady on board in it's current condition).

Hiab sounds the best, if most expensive, option. I've contacted Newark Marina already and am waiting for them to contact me.

Thanks cheers.gif

The other option for off-loading will be Farndon Marina (just upstream of Newark). They may not have a suitable pad for crane-off but you could dump it on the ground and then launch it with their slipway hoist if they cannot lift direct from the truck.

I'm fairly sure Nitrowing's boat is not a widebeam......

Suggest you start by contacting AB Tuckey - - professional boat transporters of whom I've heard nothing but compliments

Hi

We have contacted them for a quote but haven't got back to us :( may be I'm just a wee bit impatient gave them longer to get back to us :)

The boat is a little 30ft x 8.6ft widebeam & officially is not ours yet ? the survey has been booked for Friday 6th June then she will be & I wanted to be ready x

Other half keeps telling me I'm rushing things :) like I said impatient that's me lol

I'd say £350 is a good price, I own an articulated lorry and generally cost it out at £450 a day. I'd say including the time spent at each end that it would be the best part of a day's work.

Id think anyone would be very happy with that x

None of this would bother a boat mover, they are well used to moving anything, unlined sailaways, shell with no windows etc.
