Between Worsley and Monton Leigh Branch

from Monday 17th February 2014

to Monday 1st March 2014 inclusive

Notice is hereby given that due to piling works, the Bridgewater Canal will be closed to navigation at Monton whilst canal wall piling works are undertaken on the offside of the canal between Worsley Village and Monton.

Contractors working on behalf of the company will be repairing in the region of 160 metres of canal wall that has been affected by historic mining subsidence.

This closure of the canal at Monton will affect all through navigation on the Leigh Branch between the 17th February 2014 and 1st March 2014 inclusive.

The piling work is being undertaken from a floating pontoon, subject to progress of the work and weather conditions the pontoon may be moved out of the channel at weekends to allow through navigation. This is not guaranteed and a decision will be made immediately prior to each weekend.

That's just silly. Fracking doesn't cause subsidence.

The Bridgewater Canal Company have just announced that the annual maintenance of Barton Aqueduct has been brought forward to coincide with the piling works at Monton.

Why do they use the desscription "fracking" and not fractureing ? Is that not what they do fracture the rock formation to allow them to force gas out easier , seems they avoid using the fracture word if at all possible.

The proper term is 'Hydraulic fracturing' and 'Fracking' is just a slang term for it, I guess born out of laziness, particularly amongst journalists.
