Painting a galvanised water can

Following my birthday yesterday, I'm now the owner of a galvanised water can. I want to paint it in the boat's colours. Does anyone know what sort of primer I'd need to use, and whether I'd need a particular type of paint?

Galvanized etching primers on e-bay. Weathered galvanized doesn't really need it, just some light abrasion. There was a very recent thread on this too.

Hi

I use Upol etch primer in a grey aerosol can. It's available from car body repair paint suppliers. If you are in the Midlands, try

Atex Factors

Canal St

Brierley Hill.

For what it's worth, I then add base colours in coach enamel undercuts, decorate using Craftmaster flat colour and then varnish the whole can.

Good luck, happy to advise if needed.

Dave

Without being too negative, if the can was supplied by the Back Country Metalworks, try tugging at all the bits on it, and see if they fall off before bothering to start painting it.

Unfortunately most of the new cans on offer, (possibly all), seem to be BCLM supplied, and they appear to use a special type of "Teflon solder".

If it is a BCLM can, I hope it is for show, because from my experience you certainly can't expect water to stay inside them!

Bit tricky asking a loved one if its a shit can they bought for your birthday I would have thought. Are there any identification marks to show who makes them?
