Fond memories....

Started off using one of these beauties back in a former life when I used to be a TV repairman....!

Anybody else remember hybrid Decca Bradfords, G8-550's, Dorics, Thorn 300 chassis.....

My old boss used to light his fags by wrapping a rizzla paper around a long screwdriver and then short from chassis to the PL500 valve top cap...big blue spark!

Still have my AVO MK7 on the boat today...somehow seems wrong to part with it and it's still useful.

Thorn 300 chassis? Do you mean Ferguson 306s & 308s or do you mean 3000/3500s?

Giving my age away now!

Used to use the things at tech college and work. Never really understood them.

Didn't like electronics, surprising then that I was employed by GPO / Post Offce Telephones / BT for 42 years!!

Ah! You were a jointer then. U/G Lead cables and cups of tea

Seriously though, I did 35yrs too (in Brum) Mainly PABXs (planning, commissioning etc) but if I remember correctly, our meters were Taylor.

Nice one, Richard :)

It's an older model than mine, but then I have had mine since new (no leather case though, I couldn't afford that as well).

You'll almost certainly need a new 15V battery and you can get one from Maplin. The other battery is just a D cell.

You can get original test leads on Ebay but they generally go for silly money - up to £30 a pair. Seeing as how the test lead connectors take standard banana plugs I'd go for something more contemporary such as these from Farnell. I'm sure there are cheaper offerings around.

Here are some instructions.

And here's a circuit diagram

Tony

I bet the ohms per volt figure will be better on some of my sub-£10 meters than on your new purchase.

20kΩ/V as i recall, for an Avo 8.

I have one of these....

... sat just by me here - can't bring myself to let it go.

Is that an Eddystone?

Wonderful bit kit,my father had one, wonder what happened to it.

On a different note I do still have my Weston IV and weston V lightmeters

I have the cardboard box from my Weston Euromaster in front of me. No idea why it's here ;)

Used to have a III, dunno what happened to it.

Yes, I found out on Saturday night that this means everything to some people, and nothing at all to others. I have another of these cultural icons that produces the same reaction with a different group of people - a Machinery's Handbook (seventeenth edition)

Richard

I guess the box of slip gauges is the same

Oooh Machinery Handbook afraid I had to give mine away to a good mate as moving from widebeam to NB meant somethings had to go, mine belonged to my Father dated circa 1939, and I was still using it upto 1981 when I left Engineering (sorry chaps we can get it made cheaper abroad)and the number of times I've thought "if only I had some slip gauges"

Yes it uses a 1.5V battery and a 15V battery for the higher resistance ranges.

The 1.5V battery is a strange shape/size as well (anybody remember Ever Ready U2's), but I've got mine soldered to the wires.

Thank you. That has been very helpful.

Adrian

I can't claim all the credit for that. I have two friends who are AVO fanciers, and one of them is trying to persuade the rest of us to make a bulk buy to get a lower price
