Phil Ambrose
We have been living on the Broads for 8 years now and fancy a change of scenery. Bearing in mind our boat/home is 12ft beam 40ft long and 6ft 8" airdraft can anyone tell me of any potential problems. Oh and just to test your sense of humour, any chance that anyone knows of a residential marina on the K&A which might have a vacancy. bottle
There will be others that can give first hand knowledge, until the here are the official dimensions: KENNET & AVON CANAL Reading to Newbury (River Kennet Section) ...................Maximum dimension.............Absolute maximum* Length:...........70ft (21.34m)......................72ft (21.95m) Beam....................(4.27m) .........................7ft (2.13m) Draught: ................N/A ................................N/A Headroom:........7ft 8ins (2.4m).......................N/A *Consult local waterway office Additional Cruising notes: 1.Narrowboats over 70ft (21.34m) long can only pass through Burghfield and Sulhamstead locks diagonally and should not share with other boats. These locks are to be rebuilt when finances allow, to admit boats up to 72ft (21.95m) x 14ft (4.27m) Newbury to Bath (Canal section) ..................Maximum dimension...........Absolute maximum* Length:.............70ft (21.34m)..................72ft (21.95m) Beam:..............13ft 6ins (4.12m)...............7ft (2.13m) Draught:..................N/A ............................N/A Headroom...........8ft (2.4m).........................N/A *Consult local waterway office Additional Cruising notes: 1.The chambers of most locks are at least 14ft (4.27m) wide and can therefore accommodate two narrowboats, but in some instances the gates do not open fully; also a few in Caen Hill flight are slightly narrow and the lock keeper will advise where this is a problem. Crofton Lock 61 is short and narrowboats over 70ft (21.34m) long may not be able to share with other boats. The above is available here: http://www.waterscape.com/things-to-do/boa...seful-downloads . nb Innisfree
Need to take BWs dimensions with a small pinch of salt, while we were there a boat from a builders near Bath tried to navigate the K&A relying on BWs figures and failed to negotiate a bridge so had to be craned. Laurie Booth
I'd stay away from the K&A with a wide beam.

Design beam for Newbury to Bath was 13' 2" and i seen no reason why that can't be relied on still. 13' 6" maybe but you'd have to be very straight to get through Seend bottom and lock 34 (?) in the Devizes flight. Not sure what the advice to stay away from the K and A with a wide beam is all about?
GSer
For a resi mooring have a look at the Thames and Kennet Marina in Reading, it's situated just across from the K&A's junction with the Thames that would leave you a nice stretch of wide river to play on and the option of the canal if that takes your fancy. Most marinas have more boats on their waiting list than in their marinas! You may have more luck at the Eastern End How are you going to get it off the Broads? Sail it or crane it? There are probably moorings on the Gloucester and Sharpness if that's of any interest...

Not sure what the advice to stay away from the K and A with a wide beam is all about? The boat in question had issues with overall draught, air and water together. They had consulted BWs figures which didn't agree with reality, that was over 3 years ago and BW did say then that they would update their data. Also doing the Caen Hill flight could be a nightmare, meeting boats coming the opposite way.

Paul i stayed there for 2 years, until april last year, is very expensive moorings, also deiesel and pumpout expensive, staff are very health and safety minded, lol. when it snows or freezes, the water is turned off and they all hide till its gone
