There's a major new attack on Internet users all over the world and it's happening right now. The gist of this attack is to use trickery to fool you into downloading trojans which will assist criminals in gathering passwords and other personal information from your computer - or to use your computer as part of a global spam-sending botnet. Please read the details near the bottom of this newsletter. This is one of the most successful, widespread and damaging threats to ever occur on the Internet and it's important you take the simple precautions necessary to insure that you're not a victim of this scam.

Threat Level RED - MAJOR widespread attacks and threats noted!

An Urgent Warning to all Internet Users

IF YOU SEE AN EMAIL IN YOUR INBOX WITH THE SUBJECT "CNN.com Daily Top 10" DO NOT CLICK ANY LINKS IN THAT EMAIL. DELETE THE EMAIL IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT TAKE ANY CHANCES THAT YOUR ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM WILL PROTECT YOU. DO NOT, FOR WHATEVER REASON CLICK ANY LINKS IN THE BODY OF THAT EMAIL.

Over 125 million spam emails per day are being sent to internet users all over the world by spammers trying to install password stealing trojans and other malicious software on users computers by tricking them into thinking CNN is sending out emails highlighting the top ten news items for the day. This is a new and very high volume scam.

The subject of the email is "CNN.com Daily Top 10." Our Threat Operations Center has seen over 5 million of these just in the last hour alone and over 80 million in the last 24 hours. This new CNN tactic is likely to be more successful than the single-line spam tactic that we had been seeing over the past several weeks as this message looks like it could be an news update email sent by CNN. This new message also attempts to trick the user into believing that they signed up to receive it because of their email preference settings at the CNN web site. If you see this message come into your inbox, delete it immediately.

OPENING THE EMAIL WILL NOT INFECT YOUR COMPUTER - BUT IF YOU CLICK ANY OF THE LINKS IN THE BODY OF THE EMAIL AND YOU ARE NOT PROTECTED BY A GOOD, UPDATED ANTI-VIRUS - OR YOUR ANTI-VIRUS IS NOT YET RECOGNIZING THIS THREAT - YOU WILL BE INFECTED WITH AN EXTREMELY MALICIOUS TROJAN. YOUR COMPUTER, YOUR PRIVACY, AND/OR YOUR SECURITY MAY BE JEOPARDIZED.

THE SAFEST COURSE OF ACTION TO TAKE IS TO DELETE ALL EMAILS WITH THE SUBJECT LINE "CNN COM DAILY TOP 10" AS SOON AS THEY ENTER YOUR INBOX.

HERE IS A SCREEN SHOT OF THE MESSAGE - PLEASE TAKE A LOOK SO YOU WILL RECOGNIZE THIS SERIOUS AND QUICKLY SPREADING THREAT. THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST AND MOST UBIQUITOUS THREATS TO BE RELEASED UPON THE INTERNET IN SEVERAL YEARS.

Dont use Microsoft Windows - that is the only computer system that is at any real risk of attack.

And the BIG BIG secret that Microsoft dont want you to know... There other computer systems out there, and they are much better! Microsoft is a triumph of marketing, but not of product excellence!

Fuzzyduck he say "This is actually a legit warning, but still borderline spam"

Fuzzyduck is surprised, and amazed by the sheer weight of the block caps in the warning.

Fuzzyduck goes back to sleep, "be careful on the interporn boys and girls"

Usually I would ignore this kind of thing - tends to be hoax, but I've been getting these cnn emails for the past three days now- they look like a free news report. They *did* look dodgy with all the links and because knew we didn't subscribe to them.

Update your antivirus, folks. If you ever wanna check out if they're hoax or not, you can search for them on a site called snopes.com

There is a similar one purporting to come from Microsoft.

I use Thunderbird [part of Mozilla/Firefox]for my e-mail, it will flag anything that it thinks is 'spam' and will also learn if one gets through and you flag it as such.

Of course most of these 'spam/viruses' rely on the recipient opening an attachment, the easiest solution is if you do not know the sender just don't open.

If you hover over the link it will give you the address, for instance, the one allegedly from Microsoft for an update to Explorer, the link was to non Microsoft address, so obvious I do not know why they bothered.

Also get some 'anti-spyware' and 'anti-virus' software all available free on the net.

Good, constructive advice Keith,

Talking to some staff at a hospital the other day, we were talking about anti spyware/anti-virus programs, 3 of the people said that their computers had come with software installed but once the "evaluation period/free trial" had run out they hadn't bothered to update/renew the programs or indeed download the FREE programs that are available!

It is a lot cheaper to keep our puter's updated with anti-virus, spam, spyware programs than to have to go through the problems that will undoubtably occur if we choose not too.

Further to my post 11#

I received the 'CNN' e-mail this morning and 'Thunderbird' flagged it as spam.

Thunderbird also informed me it was from Patricia-5962nvs@frischerparadies.de (hope some 'spybots' pick that up  )

The e-mail informed me that I had agreed to receive e-mails from CNN but I know I have not.
