Boaty Jo
I have the hardwood to make two dog-boxes but am unsure quite how to tackle them (without nagging leaks) so would be interested to know the name of a maker as he / she may be able to help with a plan. Prepared to pay something for a good, leakproof design. Jo
Stourbridgeguy
Ok am I just being dumb, but what is a Dog Box, is it something to do with a boat or is it something you keep the dog in? I know I am going to regret asking this question. Dave

Tusses
Well I have plenty of oak and a full wood working shop - if you can describe it , I can make it. If its like a pigeon box - ie quite small - then I'll do you one for free, and then maybe make some more to sell I'm in Coventry - so about an hours drive from you. you going to crick ? perhaps we could meet there ? carlt
Dog boxes tend to live on barges, pigeon boxes on narrow boats and mollycrofts on showman's wagons.

Copsmith
How does a dog play Cricket? A Jack Russell used to keep wicket for England. He was quite good too. 54 tests, 1897 runs at an average of 27.1, top score 128 not out and 153 catches. He also is a top sports painter now. Top cricketing dog. Paul H
Brinklow Boats have experience of making them both in steel and timber. They're not cheap but they'll not leak like a great many others. The main secret seems wide enough channels at the apex of the hinged glazed flaps to take away any water so it doesn't leak down. In the latest Canal Boat Magazine, Terry Curtis the owner of the tug Rocket (reviewed) said he wrote to the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth to research the exact design of his "roof lights" (dog boxes). If they're good enough to keep out the waves at sea they should be OK for canal rain! Paul H
Kristian
Just to let all those know, Yeah a "dog box" is almost the same as a pigeon box, but made from hard wood, much bigger, double the size and even bigger if you want. They open up just like a pigeon box, but dont have small portholes, but the whole panal either side is glass, normally with brass bars going across! But ill be leaving those off! I want to put it above my double bed as ive got portholes either side and its a bit dingy! Many thanks for all your replys! Kristian. ps sorry forgot your name, but can the chap from Coventry please post pics of your work! Im intrested!
carlt
Thanks Carl, I was just thinking, great Gladys can have her own dog box on the boat but I dont think she will fit into somat so small I believe the dog box originates from where the bargee's dog lived. Evolving into something more decorative, and functional later on. The dog box on the lifeboat would squeeze a smallish dog in. Gary Peacock
A bit non traditional and modern but a dog box- Steel up stand fabricated into roof hard wood frame and double glazed Pilkington K glass. It is hinged at one end and can be partially opened for ventilation or opened fully for access.

Tusses
Thanks peeps CarlT - statements like that remind me how old I am, and how things have changed. My daughter was horrified when I told her we didn't used to have mobile phones - only 3 TV channels - looked at us gone out when we showed her a 7" single - was amazed that you could have music on both sides .... I just heard mention of a 'Dock' box on a yacht - would that be similar or more of a locker/chest ?
