Raddle......undercoat?????

Featured Posts

About to raddle my gunwales......but am thinking about undercoating first. I have rubbed down and red oxided the gunwales. I wonder if that would be enough for me to apply the raddle or does it require an undercoat? These last minute thoughts are so annoying 😒

I've had Craftmaster black raddle on top of grey primer for years now and it seems to be fine. As I understood it, undercoat provides a colour layer beneath the gloss, but red raddle onto red oxide doesn't need such a thing.

Gunwales need frequent retouching after lock scrapes so I didn't want the complication of retouching bare metal scrapes with three coats of different paints.

I just don't bother, it gets done when it gets blacked, between times its a nice shade of rust in places and black in others. The bits I walk on at red non gloss from Epiphanes

If its Craftmaster Raddle then it will be fine straight on to red oxide. It paints on easily and dries quickly so give it two or three coats. Note that new raddle is quite slippy when wet, but does get less so after a few months.

Suggest either scattering sand on the next-to-final layer of the horizontal gunwale paint, or using proper granules, to add grip.

I used Temac Suregrip paint on my horizontal gunwale, but if anything it's a bit too grippy.

Im not so keen on these things, it will likely get dirty or get fukll of green mauld and then its almost impossible to clean. My unconvention approach is to put a final coat of red oxide (Bondaprimer) on top of the raddle. This gives a proper matt finish but will fade so needs repainting every two or three years.

As for washing over sand covered paint - use a scrubbing bush and not a sponge.

Yes, that's what I used on my Suregrip-coated gunwales - a 99p scrubbing brush from B&M. Just watch your knuckles don't scrape the rough surface!

The plastic granules don't suffer from that, they are also quite cheap and a small pack goes a long way, I put twice recommended on gunwales, plus the round edge . No sign of ingrained dirt.
