The Boat Blogs on Youtube

Featured Posts

Because I am refitting an old narrowboat I visit build blogs on YouTube, some are educational, some are by silly girls, but the most annoying are grown men who get a boat and without any experience set off to wherever, most have absolutely no mechanical knowledge, and some have no common sense, I just saw one who's drive shaft had sheared, looking at it the whole boat was a disgrace, the stern gland was up to the limit, the studs/nuts rusty has hell, the bilge full of water, please God save us from these plonkers. Does anyone else watch these things and this OMG what a nerd ?

I've watched a few and thought much the same. So much so in fact I find myself shouting at the laptop screen.

I don't watch them any more to save my blood pressure. The glider channels are better.

They are not boaters, they are 'content creators'. The more of a b*lls up they make, the more (a certain type of) YouTube viewer will view their content, and the more cash they will get from the ad revenue.

One has to be selective - if the video appears to be rubbish at the start, just stop it and move to something else.

Very true.

Mike Askyn's channel for example is full of proper boating stuff.

There are loads of highly informative and/or entertaining narrow boat build blogs:

"Narrowboat Moonshine" fitting out from a shell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPtb0LcJplA

"This Tiny Life", young couple fitting out a shell afloat. Electric motor and no generator https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrnxDZYGI1I&t=40s New 6 month baby aboard hence not much cruising so far. Fascinating range cooker delivery from tow path to boat via a strange spider like crane in link above.

"Making a Narrowboat with Nanny and Grandad" An extremely detailed blog 100 odd episodes of a fitout. Here is the engine install episode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVSWh_Z4IW0

"messinaboutwithanarrowboat" A methodical early stage fitout by someone who is happy to admit what he does not know. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ehJg1nBWpU

Is there any aspect of your refit that you are looking to compare with others? I have got to know many of these fitout channels, I might be able to locate an episode for you.

I suspect many are not really about boats but about themselves and what wonderful clever (and vain) people they are, the boat/boating is just an incidental excuse to video themselves.   If there is a long introduction and no technical content within about 30 seconds then its time to stop watching.

I read somewhere that the recent huge increase in the number of barber shops is driven by social media and men wanting to look good when they make videos of themselves.

Thgat applies to a significant number of people on this forum as well IMO.
