Well…..survey done.  Not received the written report yet but caught up with the surveyor over the phone.

Pleased to hear that I’ve somehow found either the worlds most well-maintained Springer or they forgot to put it in the water for the first 30 years.

Never plated and doesn’t need plating. Given that it was presumably 6mm originally mine is still averaging 5mm with a low of 4.8mm.  Surveyor found a slightly rusty bit around the weed hatch that looked worse but knocked it off and measured from inside and out and still got 4.8mm.

Only issue he found was an odd bit of blacking about a foot square that looked like it had been missed. It’s already been scrabbled clean and re-blacked.

Happy days!  Hopefully CraftInsure will be happy and fully comp it but if not at least I know it’s sound.

👍👍👍

Remarkable, well done.

Being a Springer, did you notice if the blacking was just the small amount of side, or if the two underside chines had been blacked too?

Not that I need to know, but you might like to.

Not seen any photos yet but from the description the ‘missing’ patch was on the underside so I assume so.

Do you mean because of the V hull?

It was already freshly blacked and fitted with new anodes when prepared for sale in August. Can’t imagine they wouldn’t have done all of it??

Maybe where a prop was placed when dry docked?

Good point. Quite likely I’d imagine.

Yes exactly.

Its a ball ache to do underneath all the way to the centre, and a right bodge not to. I've seen one done half way, as far as is convenient!

Be obvious from photos I would have thought.  Surveyor sounded very thorough so doubt he wouldn’t have mentioned it if he thought to mention one small patch missing

Well.  Thanks to the very helpful and sensible approach of Rod Daniel at CraftInsure who understood the pointlessness of a full survey on an empty boat I have agreement for fully comp insurance.  No issues at all.

Was straight with him about purchase price and the fact that I’d like to insure it for substantially more as it’ll be continually upgraded as it’s fitted out.  All agreed.

Top man. 👍

OK, I can understand why some Springers have a deserved poor reputation, but like any manufacturer there are good boats and bad boats, same as cars. I had a Vauxhall Astra - the only brand new car I ever bought - it leaked like a sieve from the day I got it. The damn thing ended up in the dealership more than in my hands. I eventually sold it, the new owner discovered that the rear wheel arches had never been welded - no wonder it leaked. At the same time a friend bought the same model Astra and had absolutely no problems with it - he said it was a lovely car, nice to drive, comfy and economical.

Indeed. I think with Springers a lot of it is just snobbery because they were always cheap boats and they  have an undeniably basic look. Exposed welds, simple styling. Love ours though and I can’t fault the build quality, basic or not.   Mostly stripped out now and yet to find anything serious. Most of the steel internally looks like it was painted yesterday.
