advice needed acceptance

It does seem a shame to let this post slip away without milking it to its full potential. Most gentlemen of a homosexual bent leaning that I have come across do have a great sense of humour and dont take the subject of their sexuality to serious anymore.

Two even saw the funny side and called their boat 'Hello Sailor'

Now I'm sure the upstanding pillocks pillars of our society will slate me for this suggestion but I couldnt help thinking about all those names that have over the years been associated with gays and how some of them would make great boat names.

Bad taste or good lighthearted fun? you decide by joining in or not.

My favourite name that would make a cracking boat name is 'The Sausage Jockey' anyone else brave enough to try??? :P

See this big spoon? stir stir stir. Right! Anyone else here heard of the concept of "Heterophobia"?

Sexual harrassment by gay people towards straight people does exist, but an example of heterophobic behaviour would be when a group of gay men are talking about politics and switch to aggressively graphic descriptions of gay sex as soon as a straight man joins the company in order to exercise power by making him uncomfortable. It happens, maybe this along with homophobia, sexism and racism should all just be called under the heading "ignorant and bigoted bullying".

I know loads of others have already said this but boaters are a funny lot and anyone can fit in f they choose to. If you go around looking for reasons why you won't fit in then you won't.

Waterways is one of the few places where you are accepted for being who you are, not what you are.

Amongst the boaters I know are at least 1 cross dresser, at least one sex change, several 'travellers' and more alcoholics than enough. To me they are all fellow boaters and I'd help any of them safe in the knowledge that they would help me.

I even have friends I've never met other than in here and asking their advice is all part of the scene.

Interesting that the thought of someone's thinking you might be gay prompts you to both assert that you are straight and that a third party can confirm it, neither of which facts are absolutely necessary to the story you were telling.

So, is there an implied stigma? Although we might "tolerate" gays and be all supportive, is there still an underlying taboo such that, if we are straight, we don't want people thinking we might be gay.

I can understand it to a point in that, to take another subject, my politics happen to be of the right and, in my circles, the word "socialist" is used as a term of abuse. So I would hate to be thought of a socialist even though I don't go round beating them up.

Chris

Magpie Patrick isn't gay - but he IS a socialist LOL. :P

I'm more of an anarchist me (not of the bomb-throwing variety). I'm all for freedom - to love whoever you want and to live the lifestyle you choose, as long as you consider others too. Those living 'alternative' lifestyles such as living on a narrowboat almost always have the same attitude as me. :D

My experience of boaters is that they tend to be very accepting and liberal people and I've met many genuine "far out" freaks and weirdos of the first order too! Simply being gay doesn't put you in that category, and even if you're a gay "far out freak" then you'll still be accepted! Don't fret my friend, everybody's welcome!

:P have had more abuse for being pagan than I have for being a shirtlifter :D

That's because we make an active choice to follow a religion (or not). We're stuck with our sexuality.

Of course, before the squadders start complaining that the religious urge is an irresistable one, I acknowledge that weakness exists and the less strong willed must succumb.

Then again there are some of the more idiotic god botherers who would claim your homosexuality is merely a sin that can be purged.

All too complicated for me, I just thank god for Atheism.

Can anyone explain (in the nicest terms) the origin of the term "uphill gardner" All the other ones are pretty selve explanatory, but I can't see the reasoning in this one.

Is this a wind up? I find that particular term probably offensive as I do several of the others, but I suspect it is relating to shifting "compost".

My 'mucky calendar' (bought for me by daughter no.2, and she's an English teacher, ie teacher of English) has no light to shed on that subject, despite including at least 15 other euphemisms for sodomy.

Do what you have to do...
