Im sure many on here have met or come across Davy Swift on the Oilboat -a thoroughly decent chap 🙂

Anyway thought Id post his request for info (its on Facebook) here to see if anyone can help...

Hello.  I'm asking around to see if anyone has any historical photos of The Old Salt Warehouse in Shardlow? Tried Google, tried the CRT archives. Any ideas? TIA

The history is more complex than what appears on the internet. I did follow it more closely in the Midland Canal Carriers PDF (available from RCHS West Midlands Group) . The buildings seem to have been Cavendish Boat Company first when they operated an early carriers service to Great Charles Street in Birmingham. They went bankrupt and most of their property passes to the Trent & Mersey Canal.

The partnership in salt carrying later, involving James Sutton of Shardlow, is mentioned in my new Trent & Mersey Book, page 102
