Wrenbury LlangollenC

Going down the Yonne in Luciole we shared the journey with a two-barge combination, loaded with grain from Laroche-Migennes. Sometimes they left the lock first, sometimes we did.

In the last photo the bow of the leading vessel is being carried to the non-towpath side by the eddies prevailing, but a touch on the wheel and  turning on the power avoided a touch.

While waiting to convert Secunda on the Blackwater we would take her for a spin sometimes. Thames sailing barges were occasionally encountered. It was interesting to follow one on a close reach: they don't half move sideways.

Llangollen Canal

Written in the railway tradition ??

As they might say in the North-East, "Of way, the lads!"

I remember "Right away" being used on the railways - perhaps called out by the guard or station master to the driver? - but I suppose it really meant that the train had the "right OF way" anyway.

Alernatavely it might have referred to the time the train was due, as in the announcer saying "It will be here right away." ??

Today 2004 had ride on this. Land and water built them to move gravel to ready mix plant near Uxbridge. Need water ballast when empty.
