I use Audacity. This will record ANYTHING that is playing on the computer, YouTube or Spotify or vlc player or anything, as a flac file. I then convert them using a simple audio converter program to mp3 files that I load into iTunes and onto my iPod.

Well blow.me down, ive had audacity on my laptop for years for converting old walkman style tapes to digital format .....didnt know it could do that.

You can save from audacity straight to MP3 if you add the dll. Instructions for down loading and where to save it are in the audacity web site.

No one seems to have suggested the obvious: go to a shop (or on to eBay) and buy a CD. These days there are literally thousands of CD compilations on the market; I don't know what sort of music you're looking for, but it should not be hard to find one which you like and which suits your needs.

He's getting married, Athy. I think he wants some pretty specific songs.
