  1. You can also think about a brass strainer with proper 1/2 inch BSP inlet and outlets and hep2o adaptors. Saves mucking about with bits of hose. One on ebay with a 50mesh strainer - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pressure-Washer-Jet-Wash-Brass-Inline-Y-Water-Filter-Strainer-1-2-FF/271288244254?_trksid=p2054897.c100204.m3164&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140407115239%26meid%3Dd0630a0cde654c8ebf011c349d439fba%26pid%3D100204%26prg%3D20140407115239%26rk%3D7%26rkt%3D20%26sd%3D271288247836 Paul
  2. Paul Lilley on the dark side complaining about companies not trading honourably and it's affect on the little people. Well he should know!
  3. I fitted same batteries and spoke to Tanya and Manbat. Both advised that absorption voltage should be set at 14.2 to 14.4. I questioned the advice because of the calcium technology but the Manbat technical department were insistant. After reading many many articles and threads I also conclude it should be at least 14.8 for calcium batteries. As a weekend / holiday boater it would not amount to many hours in a year on absorption so I would not expect any significant loss of electrolyte. Might be different for liveaboards. General opinion seems to be that they are just starter batteries overfilled with electrolyte and not really suited to frequent deep discharge.
  4. It might be worthwhile talking to Mike Kelley at Friends of Cromford Canal. Their 72 ft narrow trip boat at Cromford is electric.
  5. There is a private online mooring advertised on a post next to the bridge at Kings Bromley Wharf. Looks like it belongs to the bungalow. Sorry no contact details but hopefully someone will know.
  6. Rylard was the brand name of Indestructible Paints in Birmingham. It was sold to Mainline in 2009 and manufacture was transferred to Liverpool. The paint definitely changed with the transfer which of course happened shortly after my boat was painted. The Mainline product has much less solids and dries too quickly. Had some replaced under warranty because the colour had also changed and not a bit that could be explained by age. I had an unopened tin of old paint to compare. I have to use lots of white spirit for touch up jobs with the new product - any better ideas would be very much appreciated. Primer and undercoats are also difficult to use. Might be my lack of skill but I wouldn't use it for a new paint job.
  7. Is the wire to the coil touching the A shaped bracket that the cover is fastened to? Side view would show it better.
  8. Is it just me thinking how can an armed rampage last an hour in a city without the police stopping it? In most countries they would be all shot dead in that time.
  9. A RCD Residual Current Device is required under ISO 13297. Paul
  10. RCD device = residual current device RCD = Recreational Craft Directive To confuse us simple engineers Paul
  11. ISO 13297 and the BMEA code of practice applies if building to RCD. Plenty to read there. Paul
  12. Was there on Wednesday night. Several moorers complaining about the compressor and that it runs intermittantly all night. We and some others moved on in the evening. Good curry mind, and moorings empty from Peel Wharf to the junction if you are deaf.
  13. Theres a CRT mooring available right outside the office door. No bids and £1009 reserve - must be better than a one hour commute. Closes soon but no-one will bid for it. Moorings in the area deserted this week as the compressor next door has now reached 80 decibels.
  14. It was the voltage "sensor" cable in my case. According to my voltmeter it was losing ~0.5v between the battery terminal and charger. I assume the charger tried to compensate and went into fault condition. When disconnected charger seems to ignore it. No information in my manual about this.
  15. Before sending it to Victron it would be worth disconnecting the battery voltage and battery temp sensor cables from the terminals inside to eliminate an external sensor / wiring fault. Worked for me.
  16. On my Victron charger the red alarm lamp seems to cover several faults, Looking at some of the manuals it also seems to be the same on some of the inverter chargers. My alarm came on last week and it was low voltage on the voltage sensor lead caused by the fuse in the engine compartment being partly dislodged. Disconnecting the voltage sensor lead in the charger worked until I traced the problem. Nothing to do with temperature so worth checking. Paul
  17. Vetus UFO have effective area of 3180mm2. Required hole dia is 72mm. So you need more of them. Positives are no drips, no polishing and no snagging of centre rope. Paul
  18. Is there a recommended minimum distance from stern tube to prop? Mine is currently about 2 inch and I would like to move it back to say 1/2 inch to increase the distance from the prop to the rudder. Paul
  19. Sorry for my innocent mistake. Just seen the other thread on this subject and didn't realise it might lead to WW3.
  20. I worked for several companies in sales and if I had a debt of £180,000 overdue for even a few months I would have to put the account on stop and submit monthly reports detailing action taken. I wouldn't have survived a fiasco lasting as long as PL and I am sure that would be the case in most real world companies. Raises the question who is C&RT accountable to now it is a charity?
  21. Thank you. Nice job for a rainy day.
  22. Which level switch do you use? We have a Johnson tank complete with Johnson Ultima solid state level switch and have had to change the switch 3 times in 5 years. Due again any time soon. I think the switch case is not completely waterproof - after removing they eventually dry out and work again but not worth putting back. Not easy to fit a different switch into this tank but I must do. Other problem we have found is that with the waste outlet at about 10/11 inches above water level we can sometimes pump the waste water right into the middle of tow path if we are moored that way on - usually when someone is walking past. If I was building the boat again I would settle for direct connection from sink waste to lower welded outlets with proper i.e. swaged hose connections.
  23. I agree it is good practice, just don't want the OP to be worried about his BSC if it is a bit less. I fitted a grey water tank and pump and it is a constant problem. I see many boats with engine vents a few inches above the water and that would worry me more.
