  4. If the bottom gate is still open, just back out the lock and than haul the boat in from the side. Which is what I normaly do if there is no bridge over the lock rather than use the ladder. I had to climb up the lock gate to get out, if it had been a metal lock gate I would have been stuck for sometime, little boat movement in winter on the Chester canal in the 1980's
  5. On the tidal section of the Ouse between Denver and Salter Lode, keep away from the banksides which is deep sloping mud. If you stick here on a falling tide, you may not get off on the next tide due to the suction of the mud.
  6. Not a lock to be in, if Mr helpful shuts the bottom gate after you enter. Walks off leaving you to sudden nctice that there is no ladder in the lock.
  7. Quickly followed by CPO Pertwee's "Ev'rybody down!" as the Troutbridge hits something. Tim West would have been good as old ex sailor on the shoreside saying "it's contact sport you know" https://youtu.be/TVzmVLUbSos

  9. I have used a 25kg "CQR" Anchor with 10m of 16mm chain plus 30m 20mm rope fixed to to a mount in the well deck bulkhead. (48ft) The anchor, chain and rope are kept in a old garden planter under the side step, Only once have I had to use it in a emergency, that was when just after coming out of Salters lode lock, the engine stopped dead in gear (fender rope wrapped round shaft(someone elses)). Nipped up to the bows and lower the anchor over the side until the boat stopped midstream.

  14. I have a couple of 500watt hobs brought from Maplins when they were going bust. I use them when hooked up to the shore supply, if the range is not lit. They do the job, only limit is the size of pans that can be used 18cm base. If using cast iron pans there is a risk with some high power hobs of cracking the iron due to the speed the pan heats up.

  20. Dry powder can easly be hoover up, but you will need to clear the filter a few times. It's also be brushed up which I would do first to remove the bulk of the powder and just to use the hoover on the hard to reach bits and than just wipe to remove the remaining dust. I had to do this a few years ago when I had a fire in the kitchen at home, when a fault in overhead hob extractor ignited the filter sheet.
