  3. There are many kinds of intelligence. I worked as a research technician at a university with some very clever people. In some cases their cleverness was not limited to their subject, in others it most definitely was. I believe it was Isaac Asimov who said words to the effect that car mechanics and scientists were both intelligent but in different ways. Indeed
  4. Nor do I, but it seems to happen quite frequently. You might see duplicates within some responses to various threads - probably the same thing happened.

  6. Absolutely agree with this. It's a lot easier to store smokeless fuel relatively dry and it's got far better energy density than wood. Wood is nice but not very practical on a boat.
  7. The airport made a huge difference in about 2001 - prices effectively trebled in a few months. And nationally house price inflation has been very silly for a very long time.
  8. Depends what you're buying... Computers and electronics generally are much cheaper. Take the Macintosh LC520 (also known as the Performa 520) as an example - it had a Motorola 68030 processor with an optional 68882 co-processor, 4MB RAM, a 640 x 480 pixel display and cost USD2000. By 2021 an equivalent machine might be the M1 iMac with the ARM M1 processor, 8GB RAM, 4480 x2520 pixel display costing £1249. Cars are another product whose real cost has reduced over the past 30 years. However, in 1993 I bought a 3 bed house in Doncaster for £23,000. How much would that be now? I'd be surprised to get much change out of £600,000.
  9. That's going to depend on the stat. You need a stat that is rated for 12V dc. If your stat is capable of switching the surge current of the pump then you could just wire it in the pump circuit in series like any other switch. Otherwise you need to use it to operate a switch, often a relay, that can handle the pump current. Does this make sense?
  10. I'm quite certain such secondary uses are not, in fact, sterile. However, since they were merely used for carrying coolant it probably doesn't matter very much.
  11. Funnily enough I didn't see the post where someone extrapolated from a specific small scale use case to a global hydrogen based transport economy. Has it been deleted?
  12. Point of order: Shap is on the A6, which used to be impassible rather than impossible. I suspect phat phingers in the first instance and Autokorrekt in the second.
  13. I'm sure someone manufactures a rust red. With a bit of anti-slip you might match the texture too.
  14. We're on iOS 15 now. Optimised charging didn't work for me since I tend to put my phone on charge at bedtime but wake up at all sorts of random times. Still not convinced it was ever a serious problem but I expect there are people who need their phone to be performing at warp speed 12 at all times.
  15. As I remember it was a case of a patch to slow the phone down so that as the battery degraded it would last longer which had the 'unintended consequence' of making people think they needed a new phone. But this was about 5 years ago so I could very easily have misremembered. Have you got any more recent examples? Yes, iPhones and Macs cost more than Huawei and Dell, but certainly in the case of the computers there's nothing stopping you installing Windows or any version of Linux if you so choose. I can see good reason to want to be able to boot into Linux and I'm told there are advantages to Windows, though having worked in tech support with Windows machines I certainly wouldn't give one house room.
  16. That's been going on for a while - hope you feel better soon.

  18. I'm pretty sure you're right about that. Not all providers are the same. Apple have made a point of difference in that they say they respect users' privacy. I wouldn't expect any of the others to do the same: they gain considerable value from sharing user data. You make a very good point. One reason not to use Android in my opinion but you are quite entitled to disagree. At the risk of divulging my gender I will admit that yesterday my news feed thought I might be interested in a story about oestrogen. I think that fairly conclusively shows that either Apple are no good at profiling or they do indeed respect user privacy.
  19. Is next door on the same phase? If so I'd be very suspicious of such a coincidence. ETA although I see you found that not to be the cause.

  21. CRT have an IT dept that should be capable of spotting most spam and dealing with it before it ever gets as far as the employee. Sadly, I suspect many town and parish councils would struggle with that unless they buy their email service in. Maybe that's not been seen as important but the loss you refer to incurred by a councillor means it needs to be considered in future.
  22. You've said this before but I never see any personalised advertising. Mind you, my phone and computer go through VPNs, I don't have Siri enabled, wouldn't touch a web doorbell with your bargepole and am sufficiently tight to not yet have been forced to buy a smart TV. I do use a payment card and have opted out of letting my GP share my data with all and sundry. I'd love to see some evidence that my payment card usage leaks past my bank/credit card company in any identifiable form.
  23. Clearly so. And when the system is full then it's going to matter much more than it does at the moment when pounds are several inches (for Athy) down. One boater I saw clearly understood exactly how the staircase works and had opened the white paddle to empty a lock before the preceding boat had cleared the one below. I couldn't understand the point of doing so since he was still going to wait behind the boat in front...
