  2. Here's Ruby, Berkhamsted's Gas works engine, in 1955! Picture from the Casserley "Steaming Through Berkhamsted" book.
  3. The Longford and Duke of Northumberland's Rivers are even closer - but you probably need an even smaller canoe!
  4. Nor did the woman I eventually pulled out. After I had let go of her in response to her screams of "get your hands off me, you *!!**", she was quite amenable to being pulled out by whatever means was necessary when she realised that it was the only way she was going to get out of the canal - and when she had seen her husband reversing the hire boat towards her!
  5. After I had pulled out a boy who had managed to cycle into the canal, the father was far more concerned about the sunk bike than his son, who by now was lying spluttering one the towpath. I suppose tat bikes are valuable, whereas he could go home and make another son quite easily. Then there was the woman who started screaming at me when I grabbed hold of the seat of her trouser to try and pull her out over some piling.
  6. I hope that the contemporaneous SMP (Schools Mathematics Project) was also consigned to somewhere unmentionable a long time ago!
  7. It was also a Government-run project! The private venture R100 was a far superior design. Neville Shute's autobiography "Slide Rule" is well worth reading - he was one of the principal designers of the R100.

  9. No need - just build a rotary transformer in the pintle! Chris G

  11. It probably helped that Roger owned Pacific before John Pattle and had done much of the hull restoration work. The hull design of Batavia is entirely down to Roger, whilst we must shoulder the blame for the cabin! Chris G
  12. The type recommended by Julian is infinitely better for small bootlace ferrules, as it doesn't damage the ferrule (much). For best results, it is worth adjusting the tool to suit the particular ferrule being used, as their wall thicknesses can vary noticably. Chris G
  13. Not to mention Slugs, and their possible diminutives millislug and centislug.

  15. Justin Green (JG Marine) in Braunston. Chris G

  17. To be pedantic (before anyone else is), you only need the fundamental and the odd harmonics! Chris G (who still occasionally uses Fourier Transforms)
  18. If the 4.5" refers to the OD of the pipe, then these people (and many other industrial pipe & fitting suppliers) have them: https://www.valvestubesfittings.com/welding-pipe-fittings/butt-weld-fittings-bs1965-en10253/en-10253-butt-weld-45-degree-elbows-long-radius They will be in carbon steel (or stainless, if you are feeling affluent), so ensure that you have a suitable weld procedure for welding the elbow to the pipe! Chris G ETA Confusion may be caused because many pipe fittings are specified by the Nominal Bore of the pipe, not its OD.
  19. 45 degree butt weld elbows to ASME 16.9 / BS 1640 are also standard pipe fittings. Chris G
  20. Agreed - although I think that the pub could have been saved if it had changed direction over the past 5 years. However, who in their right mind would want to live there, with the West Coast Main Line on an embankment 10 metres away on one side, the narrow, well-used towpath directly outside your windows and boats running their engines moored up outside? Sounds perfect! Chris G
  21. Living less than 100 yards from the Crystal Palace, I have heard this story many times, but have never seen anything to substantiate it. I suspect that it was only the original facade that resembled the Crystal Palace (apologies for the tiny image):
  22. Here is the planning application: https://planning.dacorum.gov.uk/publicaccess/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=QEOJCXFOJYL00 Chris G ETA The Viability Report makes interesting reading. Savills would probably taken a different view if they were trying to sell it as a going concern!
  23. As an electrical engineer, it was the data that I found beautiful, not just the colours! Chris G
