Wooden widebeam boat on Regents Canal. Dangerous?
Kawayuppie replied to Kkk's topic in General Boating
Les offered this very boat to me last year. Was really tempted, however, no time and money sadly. I guess he had no takers, and he already had a number of project boats. Hence put up for sale. If I recall, Les was thinking of installing electric propulsion as he has done with some other boat. -
Reducing the relative humidity will reduce the condensation. Depending on temperature a RH of 70% or greater will give you wet window frames. The use of a good dehumidifier works well in my case.

If you don’t already have guide books, though getting a bit dated now, the Imray guides for The River Great Ouse and tributaries and Fenland Waterways have some useful information. Read up on the usage of the locks. On the Nene and River Great Ouse, they are operated differently, not in the same way as on canals. I have recently found visitors to the rivers leaving the locks in the incorrect state.

Have a look at Nabru, https://www.nabru.co.uk/ You can design your own, chooses shape and sizes of all elements. I have a two seat sofa and a single seat. Because one can choose narrow arms, for example, you can get something that will fit nicely in a boat. They are delivered in pieces and need assembling, however this was free with delivery. oh yes, they storage under the seats.

MMP-I had a stand at the Crick Boat show, (maybe two years ago when I was there last), and were promoting a new propeller called the "Canal Line", designed for the harsh canal system ... If I visit the website, they have all their other propellers listed but none of the Canal Line ones. However, if I do a web search, I do find a link to an announcement on their site, it just that you can't reach it from the sites front page. It is almost as if they are keeping it sort of hidden. I do see that Midland Chandlers are selling them. What I'm asking, does anyone use this propeller, and what is the feed back if any?

I have noticed they are not trading anymore. Company is closed. I tried to call them and was told by the person who answered that the company has gone. Looking on Companies House I see that accounts overdue ... I was wondering why I haven't heard anything form them in a long while.

Red Diesel Update - Meeting 20/11/18
Kawayuppie replied to Alan de Enfield's topic in General Boating
Even If one is not living on your boat, you might holiday on it for extended periods. So one can benefit from cheaper fuel for heating & electric. I stand corrected, but doesn’t one pay a lower rate VAT on electric for a domestic supply? Sure I happen to live on a boat at the moment, please don’t hold that against me -

Advice on moving from the states to live aboard the cut
Kawayuppie replied to Visubversa's topic in New to Boating?
Soldering equipment, gas torch, yes, no kiln. Anything requiring kiln is sent to a studio that has an appropriate kiln. We wouldn’t have enough power for an electric kiln ... me thinks. -

My mrs and I live on a boat and she makes and sells her own silver jewellery .... Waterways attracts arts and crafts. Lots of inspiration I guess. -
Yes, and they do not have engines. There are still a bunch of them at Priory Marina, Bedford.

I have an EZYDOG harness on a labradoodle, and have already used the handle to fish the dog form a canal. So I know it works as a lifter https://www.ezydog.co.uk/convert-harness

Cheers, I had actually forgotten about that. That is the problem with ink jets, even the cheaper ones have sponges that soak up the waste ink, then stop working, until It is sorted out. With cheaper printers it is easier just to chuck them skip as it is a PITA to access and clean out the sponges.

I am using an EPSON with continuous ink supply system (CISS), though have only been using it for a few months now, so can’t say how much I have saved on ink costs yet. I have ink for 3 years allegedly! My previous printer was a high end Canon inkjet, which worked well for a few years, however it eventually died, and repair cost was well more then the printer. My other half works form the boat, and tends to print a fair amount.

Boaty legal advisers? Issues with New and Used Boat co.
Kawayuppie replied to Cpickle's topic in General Boating
Sounds like your hydraulic steering is coming apart. With my boat, which was brand new, the builders had not tightened up the bolt that connects the hydraulic ram to the arm that connects to the rudder. As the connection unscrewed the steering got progressively worse. Until it dropped off and we were adrift in the River Great Ouse about a mile from Offord Lock! i suggest you better look at your steering before using the boat. -
Current widebeam has a wheel, I must have had a brain fart at the time, as all previous boats in my life had tillers. It is okay, but it did fail when on the river in the middle of nowhere. Linkage had come loose from the hydraulic ram to the rudder. Fortunately have an emergency tiller. I do find a tiller nicer to use on the twisty bits of the river. As said above already, more pricise and you can make rapid changes. I guess having a wheel one can be more social as more people can join you on the stern deck. Boat has some nice seating on the stern that can't really be used fully with tiller in place while cruising.

Maybe kids is too loosely used. I meant louts / teens. And you would be surprised who can use a chainsaw.

Summer holidays. Bored kids. There will be more of this, sadly.

And they made it look like you are going fill speed into a closed lock! -
I have a Collingwood, not a 9ft wide, but a 10ft beam. I can't say I have had any big problems. The delivery was a bit delayed, and some niggles and snags, that are getting fixed by Collingwood and the broker. I find that you need to keep on their case though, but I find being polite helps a great deal.
