  2. I would but the thread has grown in 47 minutes - merge (and some editing) coming up!
  3. Thanks all - I'll maybe buy the "MIG" welder and a reel of flux cored wire* - If I get on with it then I've got the regulator and bits for when/if I want to go MIG. If I don't get on then I've only wasted the cost of a reel of wire when I switch to gas. [ * - plus, obviously, the safety equipment ]
  4. Thanks - I'll have a look I know the local landlady very well - I'll have words, thank you. Thanks

  6. This isn't to build or maintain a boat - but it could be! If I'm wrong, report it and I'll get it moved... I learnt to stick weld when I first started work, the company believed in a wide experience so my first three months saw working in a sawmill, sheet metal, paint shop, PCB manufacture, conformal coating, metal (and plastic) turning etc. In those days MIG was not a thing. I've now got a lot of small jobs in the garden such as bird tables, hanging baskets, seats and tables. Individually I'd bodge with self tappers and cable ties but I'm tempted (I like toys!) with a small welder such as the R-Tech 180A. I know I'll need a mask and gauntlets but the gas supply has me stumped. I used to SCUBA dive - our tanks were rated by capacity at ambient pressure (also known as "water capacity" or WC) and a rated pressure - example, a 12l tank at 200 bar was 2,400 litres of usable air. MIG tanks are "different" - The most common seem to be "disposable" weighing around 4kG and holding 60 litres of 86% Argon / 14% CO2. At the quoted rate for a MIG torch (15l/min) they last around four minutes - that seems awfully bad for the environment (and my wallet!) - throwing 1 kG of steel in the bin every 60 seconds! Are there more sensible options for MIG - or should I revert to Stick Welding?

  8. I've approved your post - but please note that @Alleycat Too originally posted over four years ago...

  12. Orkney... When we got the late ferry to Kirkwall from Aberdeen, I always ended up driving the minibus (12 SCUBA divers plus kit) the last few miles from Kirkwall to Stromness - that sign (just after Finstown) was the signal to ring the skipper and get him to get the kettle on! (Given it was over eight miles off the main drag - we always wondered if they kept the sign just for tourists...)
  13. See Ofcom Guidance as linked to by Jen - "The moderators have a liking for OFCOM's research on acceptable language in broadcasting." - You may (or may not) find it offensive - I may (or may not) find it offensive. Tw@t is in the "moderate" category from Ofcom which I treat as "depending on context" (and thanks for the side discussion while I was typing on the merits of Tw@ versus Tw@t) From a personal perspective (not as a Mod) the forum would improve if language was kept reasonable - there are other, less offensive words than S#!t for what comes out of a pump out; use them!
  14. Whilst possibly an acceptable word to describe "excrement" - the one's who are stirring are those who keep repeating the word...
  15. Thanks for reporting back - you'd be amazed how many people don't...
  16. I presume talking about RCR rather than the engine the OP mentioned?
  17. If I'm allowed to slightly hijack the thread, I have a Patio Gas cylinder marked "13 kG Propane" which has a built-in gauge, currently reading "Hi" [the alternative end of the scale is "Lo"] - (I don't know if the smaller cylinders are the same, but this Patio Gas had a weird regulator with a knob which on first activation clamps the regulator to the cylinder and on the second turns the gas on - there is no manual valve on the cylinder) The BBQ went to the great kitchen in the sky last month - If a boater in the Wolverton area wants the cylinder - it's free, and I want to get rid. I can deliver (say) between Fenny Lock (or Willowbridge marina) and Cosgrove - ish; if close by, please ask.
  18. Good! I thought I might get a few comments on the first 1,000 images on this forum - I got nearly 250 (for obvious reasons, mostly waterways related.) If I can get another 250 on Ian's railway images, it'll save me getting bored while @magpie patrick gets the next batch in the post!
  19. I've joined Railforums - same Username as here I've not posted yet - I'll have a look around, see if there is any existing mention of either ROMA or Ian Moss first.
  20. I've now updated all 243 images that I've had identifiable comments for - the only ones I've knowingly left out are the VHF Channel Numbers on the Rhine, which I will add when I've done a bit of research. The next batch of slides are being packed as I type - watch this space...
  21. Not quite off topic. Many years ago, I nearly wrote off our Isuzu 3.1 TD Short Wheelbase. At the time, I subscribed to the disconnect battery "myth". We talked a local garage into fixing the (rear end shunt) damage for less than the insurance write off cost, and they did a wonderful job. When I picked the car up, I thought "attention to detail" - they have set the clock after disconnecting the battery On the way home, I turned the radio on - it wasn't locked; and was still on Radio 2. I checked - "no sir, we don't bother disconnecting the battery, if you do the job right it makes no difference".
  22. I can't do any better than quote the previous poster - so I have...
  23. Apologies for what must seem like slow progress - I'm staggered by the response on this forum... I've updated around 200 titles (and moved many images) from the original 1,100 or so. Anyone visiting Ian's Archive can see where we've got to. Having said that, I'm only up to comments (whether by email, on my website or on this forum) up to Monday 14th August... Five days to go - by which time more comments will have arrived. (If it seems slow, I'm also keeping a spreadsheet of who commented what and when so If I get two comments on the same image I can quickly cross reference) And I understand @magpie patrick is heading home with another 3,000+ slides for scanning - watch this space.
