  2. Love the pun on the inventors name. https://news.utexas.edu/2017/02/28/goodenough-introduces-new-battery-technology
  3. Thought you were about to say an ecofan can catch mice
  4. Not necessarily. When we had our last shareboat, I was unlucky enough for it to break down (water in the bottom half of the fuel tank) just as I was entering Watford bottom lock. As easy road access was almost impossible there, I asked someone to tow me to the A5 bridge, to make it easier for the technician to help me get the boat going again.
  5. Yes and he is 94 years old. I believe he Invented the Li-on battery in 1980, but it took 30 years to get it into viable production.
  6. Problem is when they say "two years away" it may be considerable longer. For example when I was in the 6th form in 1970, my physics teacher showed me magazine articles about the hydrogen fuel cell which was then claimed to be "two years away from being viable to power a car". Whilst there have been many prototype fuel cell powered vehicle, 47 years later none are in volume production. Same with aluminium air batteries, I saw a prototype demonstrated in 1985. It's main market was supposed to be for powering cars and standby power. Again it was only a couple of years away from being productionised. So I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the sodium glass battery.
  7. This Is Dave Gilmour's boat. Hardly a narrow beam It is moored on the Thames at Hampton, opposite Tagg's Island. OK who nicked the text from Rusty's quote?
  8. Always tail current. Once the readings have stabilised for 3 consecutive readings, each 30 minutes apart the battery is pretty much fully charged Note this is true even with an calibrated ammeter.
  9. But are they calibated? Poor Mike, he is having an argument with himself and losing
  10. My first introduction to canal boating was on the pair of self steer UCC boats in July 1973 as part of a venture scouts, one boat for the boys and one for the girls. Unfortunately I failed to take any photos of the boats, only the people on board. Can't remember the names of the boats, but I enjoyed it so mucho hired one the next year with friends to overcome the restrictions the scouts had put on the first holiday. Camping boats must have introduced hundreds of young people to the canals, something that is much needed today to ensure their future.
  11. Ashby Canal is lock free and if you turn left at the end you can try the stop lock st Hawesbury Junction (1 foot drop) and turn back at the bottom of Hillmorton Locks. 01455 212671 sales@ashbyboats.com
  12. My boat is 10 years old and uses 3M Thinsulate.Thefr have been no issues with it. My previous boats has sprayfoam insulation. I would say it is almost but not quite as good as sprayfoam for thermal insulation but has better noise insulating properties. It also has the advantage of being easily removed when the hull needs welding, and unlike sprayfoam cannot be put on unevenly, leaving thin spots.
  13. I find baby wipes work on the glass of my drip feed diesel stove. Previously on a multi-fuel stove I used newspaper and ash and a wet green scourer for the really burnt on bits.
  14. Have a greenie. Certainly the one we had in our first shareboat was demonstrably useless. I put "tinytalk" temperature loggers around the boat, and they read the same whether the ecofan was in the stove or not. However I do wonder whether they can work in some configurations of boat, (stove position and furniture position), because so many report that they do work, although it always seems to be anecdotal rather than empirical evIdence based. The alternative is that those who buy them convince themselves that they work...
  15. That is what the dIode test function of a multimeter does, it uses the 9 volt battery to switch the diodes of the GI on. Gibbo used a 9 volt battery and test lamp to do the same IIRC.
  16. You don't have The GI connected to anything to test it. This video shows the principles of using the diode testing function of a multimeter to test a GI.
  17. Can't someone just move the sign to the other side of the M6? That should keep the anglers happy without upsetting the boaters.
  18. Inthought the Ford Edsel was universally acclaimed as tne worst car ever. "The 1958 Ford Edsel was supposed to be the new premiere car for middle-class Americans. Ford was so confident in the product that it pumped $250 million into it. But instead of starting a revolution, the company lost $350 million on the unattractive gas-guzzler."
  19. I think you will find that the zero bladed one is just as effective as any bladed one and quieter to boot.
  20. You think that he may live under a bridge demanding tolls?
  21. That will be the wind chill effect from the eco fan.
