  1. If you pick up a cheap multimeter on your way back from work or can borrow one and post the photos later, we still might be able to get you working again today or tomorrow.
  2. I don't know. Do you know where you get it from? The 1995 act defines a boat with no home mooring, but doesn't use the "continuous cruising" phrase anywhere.
  3. Those 24 shots of your left ear you took with the new camera before you got used to it came out well ...
  4. Stupid question: is there power at the bollard? Check with an appliance not just a visual check of the breaker.
  5. Tying it in knots and leaving us in stitches! Ken is a proud member of the International Guild of Knot Tiers, and a very entertaining speaker. Keeping him well lubricated with beer reduced the accuracy of the knotwork but greatly increased the entertainment.
  6. Not usually, although some do require them. Most have their own meters in the supply bollard.
  7. You could always go and help/teach the ones who are struggling ...
  8. Excellent application of Nudge theory that. If you don't believe your government when they tell you to evacuate, don't expect them to be able to help you later but do try and make it easier to identify your corpse ...

You are more experienced now, and know what to expect next time. Good luck with the boat hunting - it can be very frustrating at times on a tight budget, but there are some useable older boats around for £10-£20k. The ones worth having tend to get snapped up very quickly though!

I'm guessing it was this one https://www.midwayboats.co.uk/boatsforsale-317.html 40’ cruiser stern project narrowboat This boat was built by Stone Boatbuilding, the exact year is unknown but we believe it must be 1970’s. Power is provided by an air cooled Lister diesel. She is being sold as a project as she is in need of work. Viewings and thorough inspections are welcome. The condition of the hull is unknown and as with all our used boat we would encourage a pre-purchase survey, however we do have craning facilities on site so this can easily be arranged. She is afloat at our site in Penkridge. I know it can be frustrating looking at project boats, but if you can walk away from a boat that would have cost you another £10,000 on top of the purchase price then the survey was worth getting.

Yeah, that would do it! Was it a boat worth £17000+ when the welding was done? If so it was priced to account for the work needed so I'm not surprised they wouldn't agree to paying for the fix. I'm not sure what you think the brokerage/ boatyard have done wrong here.

I'm confused. It's absolutely normal for a prospective buyer to pay for lift out and then back in when getting a survey. It's also normal to have to pay to "make good" any damage done to the blacking by the surveyor. What did your sales contract say? Many say that unless faults discovered by the survey come to more than 5% or 10% of the agreed purchase price you have still agreed to buy the boat. What faults did the survey pick up that put you off the boat?
  13. Bits of the L&L look like that sometimes ...
  14. Yep, I have been having the same this week. Because the leaves only get caught by the swirling water round the propeller, by the time you have stopped and opened the weedhatch there is nothing to see. They don't get wrapped around the shaft or propeller, they only swirl in the water but it doesn't take much to really disturb the water flow so the boat slows down, sometimes to a dead stop. It's very common in Autumn when the leaves start falling, but the recent storms have shaken enough loose to get it now. As I said above, when it next starts drop into neutral for a few seconds or give a short burst of reverse then carry on.
  15. About Nelson if they do that allowing time to get back. I'm not sure it's worth doing Barrowford flight twice for the extra little bit unless they want the excitement of going to Morrison's mooring to do some shopping. I suppose they get to see the waste oil disposal point too, but on a hireboat they won't need to use it! Going back past Silsden to the top of Bingley five rise would be a better trip if they want to press on rather than just pootle across the tops and back.
  16. If you think Harecastle is a fuss you should try Standedge tunnel. Book in advance only, get measured at the entrance in detail, chaperoned transit and three stops to check in with the office by telephone to report progress. It's great!
  17. I'd not plan on going any further than Barrowford, winding below the top lock and return. If you have time to walk a couple of miles into Barrowford itself there's a selection of pubs and eateries, but I don't have any specific recommendations. Hare & Hounds at Foulridge is well worth the walk up the hill. Anchor Inn at Salterforth. Cross Keys at East Marton by the double arch bridge. Not much over the tops, but the Cross Keys is walkable from the top of Bank Newton, if you can do a few miles. The Mason's Arms (preferred) or the Old Swan at Gargrave. Plenty of choice in Skipton obviously. The White Lion at Kildwick if you stop there. Don't miss The Red Lion in Silsden itself if time allows. That should be enough for four days!
  18. Leaf ball round the prop. Try "chucking back" - use a short burst of reverse next time it does it and see if it fixes it. It's astounding how much a few swirling leaves near the propeller affect forward motion, and can totally prevent it if there are enough of them.
  19. Where do you want to go / what do you want to do? Leeds is possible if you do long days, but get the timing correct for Bingley, or go the other way over the pretty bits and do Skipton and Foulridge tunnel.

  21. As in both of them you were specifically calling Athy a twit (give or take a vowel) you really shouldn't need any explanations. Thunderboat Words Absolutely Taboo here ...
  22. Don't be so silly. It's four elephants stood on the back of the turtle!
  23. Deadly serious. We always look forward to October, as nearly all the VMs empty over the last weekend in September. It's even better in November, as the VMs nearly all go to 14 days. March comes as a bit of a shock again though!
