  1. It is easy to swap the 240v sparker for a 12v version. Unless caning the grill we find we don't need the fan, when we do it is inverter on time.
  2. I didn't use charts or carry vhf. The only drama was when I left my dad in charge and went for a nap, and he forgot which way to push the stick. Loud panicked shout and I jump back onto the counter to see we are at 45 degrees to the bank and the bow is about 6 ft from impact. Full throttle and opposite 'stick' and drama averted. He didn't get another go on the river!
  3. The most you are allowed on 2.5mm cable is 27 amps, in ideal conditions. However that is over 6kw! Are you going to boil a kettle with the immersion and fan heater on? If in doubt just run 4mm.
  4. Squirrel - top vent for wood, bottom for smokeless. Coal burns from below.
  5. I presume you have a good reason for not putting the socket at the back? Eg marina berth nose in?
  6. I will have a look in my on site guide for cable ratings. I'll need to know the distance of the run.
  7. It isn't predictable. Next winter there may be almost no ice on the LL, or there may be hardly any thaw. Shady spots like Shipley seem to freeze the worst. If you aren't concerned about your blacking, you can often force a passage. Skipton has frozen as early as November in the last ten years. Ish.
  8. Why not run two 16a banks of sockets? No single item is going to use more than 13a. I presume you are derating the 2.5mm for running in insulation? Also the ring main idea as mentioned will help here. Effectively parallel cables joined at a socket.
  9. Solar panels will give something like their full output if Angled at sun Cold It isn't cloudy You aren't shaded at all Basically they don't work too well between October and March. On a rainy day in winter I am looking at maybe 5-10ah per day from my 500w. What you need to do is find a good way of monitoring your batteries, either with a cheap voltmeter and amp meter or a smartguage. Then you will know when to run your engine. Half an hour is not enough. If that is all you can manage, do it every day in the morning to supply bulk charge, then hope the solar tops up the rest. I can't stress enough that you need to learn to listen to your batteries, and charge them when they ask for it. Or they will die very quickly. Good luck
  10. New batteries, three 110ah ones, should cost about £210 as a very rough guide. You can sell the old ones to a scrapyard for about £30 ish. Again, very rough guide.
  11. Shore! But I'm going to do my best to silence the CS, silencer and insulated shed.
  12. Update. It isn't a problem to source this stuff. A 6 groove v belt is 22mm wide, can be had from any motor factors at 2403mm long. Standard alternator belt. The v belts in the link above are not for an alternator and are too narrow (I found out after buying one) Alternator pulleys don't have a keyway and are held by friction against the fan and nut. So easy to machine your own for two v belts or even easier a flat belt.
  13. As far as I'm aware, Dunkley is the only case of crt trying to enforce cc behaviour when having a home mooring. They lost. We are currently shuffling around skipton and gargrave because our v lovely rural mooring is not fit for a baby and a mum to get to and from the road. I don't expect any hassle for this. I will be upset if we do, we are complying with the act. Btw no one need waste their breath saying we should get a marina mooring, I'd rather leave the cut. And then crt lose my £2200 pa.
  14. Nothing to worry about. You should've seen our rayburn!
  15. It is often collected for drinking in Australia I believe. I've been told that once you've tried rainwater you won't like to go back to corporation water. Good for the skin too.
  16. You may well be aware of this, but you know you can't run an engine or generator between 8pm and 8am so it's possible to run any narrowboat out of power?
  17. Why not put parallel large alternators on the main engine, and silence it really well. That will also give hot water. The engines on a local hire fleet are very very quiet. I don't see your hirers using more than 2kw(!) and even a 50amp alternator will power a henry hoover.
  18. Hi Neil. Is that 120 amp at 12 volts though? Otherwise you are looking at 3600w and that might be a bit much for 5 hp. Interested in the alternator contact
  19. Yep, 5-1 should be a breeze with the big flywheel on the CS Also, I'm having a change of heart, I think a 70 amp alternator would be more manageable, still giving 2kw at full chat.
  20. You are all amazing. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=181658850304&alt=web The above is the alternator I'm looking at. I think it is an 8 groove v belt. I'd need it 2.3 meters long. I think the speed is 2.3m times 650rpm divide by 60 about 24 meters per second?
  21. Ok, so I'm definitely going for a 5 or 6hp lister CS as my off grid genset. I'm looking at an iveco 110 amp alternator, but need some help finding the v belt that fits the alternator and will fit round a CS flywheel. I'm going to need a belt that is over 2m long, as the flywheel is I think 160cm in circumference. I need a belt man! It's also an option to source a suitable belt, then put a suitable pulley on an alternator.
  22. The technological solution is to wire a loud buzzer to the float switch for the bilge pump. My insurance is invalid without such an automatic switch, and adding a buzzer is easy enough. This is no use to poor Kate though. Awful.
  23. I was getting 22 amps from my 500w this am, but that's not when it will run hot, I think. I imagine it's when receiving 30a but only sticking one or two amps into the batteries that it will run hotter. That is conjecture however!
