  1. if you fold over edges (hence "cut cling film slightly larger") they do not get mouldy or soggy. Does the laminated version stick to the widow on its own or do you need to use tape?
  2. Cut a piece of cling film slightly larger than twice the size of the licence, wrap it and it sticks to the window glass, stays there all year and looks neat Make sure area of glass is clean and dry
  3. They will come to you using a contraption with wheels. Much quicker

(Google Keep app) Going from stern to bows * = winter only Stern tube greaser connect shore supply Check credit on supply post stow exhaust chimney side fenders weather exhaust flap (4) pigeon box cover stow rubber roof mats (1) stow life belt stow tiller bar padlock sliding hatch rear door draught excluders * engine room doors combi to charger (2) bow thruster charger on ignition off switches off (3) open taps window bungs cabin side doors heaters plgged in * heaters set to frost stat * freezer open fridge switch off fridge open hi fi off heating off water off front chimney off and cap on gas off (1) have a couple of mats on either side of the rear hatch from a cut down car mat to stop paint chipping when you put the windlasses on the roof during lock wheeking (2) Combi set to charger so if power fails the inverter doesn't kick in and flatten the batteries (3) In engine room - water pump, toilet, freezer, etc (4) replace exhaust chimney with a flappy cap like they put on top of tractor/truck exhausts because I don't like blocking the exhaust off completely

  7. Going North, China Gardens, Water park & South end of the Harecastle tunnel. Stoke-on-Trent isn't the wild west For those going South who are totally paranoid about stopping in S-O-T, who are last through the tunnel and really do not want to stop anywhere in the area, the lock is over an hour from the end of the tunnel so after 6pm would be quite a feasable time to be trying to transit the flight. If you are at the China Gardens you quite often see boats on the move after 6pm. However I can see that because there is no access off the towpath from the lock apart from the narrow bridge at the tail of the lock and through a gate to the road on the off side, there is a potential for an serious accident if crowds of people are trying to file across it and also go round the lock beams with an unprotected drop. The temporary bridge thus seems a sensible solution.

  10. You get a paper or pdf copy from the examiner why do you want to view the BSS records directly? Why make a database more complicated and open to abuse than it needs to be by having outside access, with the data protection issues which go along with that. You know all you need to know from the paper/pdf copy - that's it, get over it
  11. As a starter (try the cheap options first) The bearing may appear tight but has dried out/ has the grease washed out so:- If your top bearing on the tiller has a grease nipple - pump plenty of grease from a grease gun into it. Rotate tiller backwards and forwards while you are doing it.
  12. If you are suggesting length of 2 x 2 pine for a pole I think that is a pretty dangerous idea
  13. I suggest you put a couple of plastic cable ties x-wise over the connector to stop it happening again
  14. Somewhere on the wiring loom near the engine there may be a multi-pin male/female connector block covered in a black (usually) rubber shroud. It is easy to knock it when you are checking oil, water etc and it can disconnect on one or two pins with strange and sometimes intermittent effects. Make sure it is fully pushed together ETA and sometimes intermittent

I have a red oxide coloured roof which gets too hot to touch and non opening portholes, the min/max thermometer in the boat has not shown above 30.5 this year and that was reached on the record breaking hottest July day ever. Our previous boat would get like an oven on a nice sunny day with a light grey roof and top opening large windows. the current one is spray PU insulation, the previous block PS. The glare off the light grey made cruising unpleasant on a sunny day.
  16. I can not comment on this as it took me twelve days from deposit to survey/blacking to full payment and a further 3 days before I moved the boat North. ETA - I read the arrangement as fundamentally "if you want the boat don't b****r about" which was fine by me. Selling my old boat took ages from taking the (non refundable) deposit, so much so that I was beginning to give the broker ear ache over the delay.
  17. having bought a boat from ABNB last year I can confirm Neil's statement. The wording on the deposit receipt says :- Quote "Deposits are fully refundable until the Sale Agreement Contract is signed" Unquote Edit - added deposit

  22. Changed the name of our first boat without any special incantations and whilst it was in the water. When we had a breakdown (burst hose) I said to my wife we should not have changed the name. She pointed out that we had had up until then 8 years of trouble free boating Just do it and don't worry, love your boat and it will love you back.

True Oh! so literally true At Fradley bank holiday weekend in the pound below the Swan, I was feeling pretty pleased with myself having moored in a gap only a couple of feet longer than the boat with a large green knitted plastic sack wrapped round the prop which took 45 minutes to cut off. Time for a pint - so SWMBO and myself set off, passing the next but one boat up there was a sign on the side saying "Canalalia" which I looked at and proceeded to trip over a mooring ring onto the gravel. Skinned knees, skinned elbows. shredded hand and a gash on my eyebrow, blood everywhere. Needless to say I felt pretty stupid going back to the boat to get cleaned up and covered in elastoplasts. Still got my pint (or two) - purely medicinal of course
