Thats the bit & true, vandalism, not the first time on this flight,
With a trifor winch you winch the gate up & have it fixed in no time, but C&RT are not willing to do this on overtime so it seems !
True, but they have decided to go round via Gt Heywood & Coventry Canals.
Standard pre-printed notice saying ring this No. or check Waterscape, with locks Closed written on in pen.
Friends asked me to check as they just got to bottom & were faced with red fencing & a printed notice, as you say nowt on stoppages, the call handling service also know nowt !
Might be worth phoning either Caversham or Goring locks, I know Goring has mooring on the mill stream, ( £8 per night last year) or as above. Goring has a railway station on the Reading - Oxford line.
Ours used to let in rain that bounced off the roof & came in the front end, I remedied that by sticking a piece of rubber to the edge of the opening with mastic to seal the gap, not had a problem since.
Beeston Iron Lock
Was told that not possible to fit ladders as it would destroy the integrity of the structure a cause a collapse, due to the nature of the ground in which it stands & the whole of the reason for the construction in the first place. (Yes, we asked the question when the lock open day was held)
Strictly speaking no, but we found that it's useful to be able to see ahead, also used a removable light on the butty's slide pointed at the roof to aid steering.
As far as I know, the difference between the "A" or "B" models is the diameter of the bit aperture, the A being imperial the B metric, & yes you can get adaptors so that modern hexagonal bits can be used, (I got one of these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hex-Bit-Adapter-Millers-Falls-Yankee-Stanley-130-30-/320695204048?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aaaec78d0 Does the job !)
We used - http://www.cutfoam.co.uk/retail.html fast delivery, good product, though they deliver by post so you would have to dispose of old one yourself.
Yes, Waterworks was the boat that sank, (not helped by the fact that its ballast was loose gravel which shifted when the boat started to tip.
Most of the problems with low water levels in that pound are due to the culvert which normally feeds it is blocked, this is due to be rectified during the stoppage. When the seals to the bottom gates of the bottom lock are repaired, these came loose during the summer & were temporarily repaired with acrow props. There is an open day planned during the stoppage if anyone is interested. Longer working hours so that all the "public" can buy what they want, a chance to get the debt under control, as the hourly rate is more than trebled as the hours are "anti-social" !
