  1. Is that the moveable towpath underthe M62 is no longer moveable?
  2. We are 30" draught and got through Savick Brook twice without any problem. We did have to ring CRT and get them to change our draught on their records before we could book. We are now shown as 0.69 metres whatever that is in old money. Our Beta 43 in a Jonathan Wilson hull had no problems running at 2200 revs for the necessary time. We did have a full water tank as advised by the locals but we didn't need to run off hot water or run the Alde pump.
  3. I don't think curtains were discussed once in the five years we had the share.
  4. We had a share of a Carefree Cruising boat and after some teething problems when the boat was new everything was sorted. The boat was well managed and looked after. It would be best if you can attend the AGM where lots of decisions about the running of the boat and its location are made. We sold our share in 2012 so our experience is 11 years out of date.
  5. Yes. It's not safe. But it's safer than where he was with the bow over the towpath and the stern over the channel. I've been in contact with him on the phone and he realises he's made a mistake by being on the river in the first place. But he is where he is and until the river goes down some he can't really move from there. I've told him to get to Zouch cut just as soon as the river lets him. How is it above Kegworth Deep? Is that a safe place?
  6. This took place on 6th December. The chap was stranded on the Soar between Kegworth Flood Lock and Ratcliffe Lock. The speed that the river rose took him by surprise. He had been moored on piling with over two feet of piling above the water line. The next morning his boat was floating over the towpath so he had to do something. Here is a 360 degree video of his escape to a safer mooring. https://youtu.be/Bc9S9V2AHoI You can drag the cursor around the screen to get the 360 degree view.
  7. Possibly the contractors are being paid by CRT and Sustrans/Local Authority are paying CRT?
  8. Working on my PC now too. Thanks whoever fixed it.
  9. Is anyone else having problems with Canalplan today? I can't plan a route, nothing happens when "select place by name" or "select place by location" is clicked. Also nowhere to click on to log in. I've tried canalplan.uk and canalplan.org.uk as well as Firefox and Edge. @StephenA
  10. It obviously had road access for the construction process but I wonder if it will remain now construction has finished. Google street view
  11. I'd hardly call Brentford "Central London". I think it's in zone 4 on the TfL map.
  12. When we insured with Collidge & Partners we got a 10% discount for having a RYA inland waterways helmsman certificate. I found the course useful and learned some tricks. My partner got a lot of confidence from doing the course. We used Bear Boating near Leeds. You can use your own boat or one of their hire boats. Well worth doing but not particularly for the 10% discount.
  13. So not over 6 metres then! Actually just shy of 3. I'm not saying it's not bad in the Don Valley just that the EA predictions are wildly inaccurate.
  14. Actually I misread the figures. I read that 2.4 metres was the previous record high. I was mistaken, the 2.4 metre reading is the top of the normal range. The previous record for Sheffield Lady's Bridge is 4.47 metres (June 2007) which is round about the predicted level for this afternoon. So it looks like things are looking bad. But I still stand by my comment that the EA predictions are often wrong. Last January we sat at Shardlow for three weeks closely watching the levels on the Trent and trying to predict when the Cranfleet floodgates would open so we could get back North. The predictions on the EA gauge bore little resemblence to what actually happened a day or so later. The same thing frequently happens in York and many other places.
  15. Yes, but nearly 2 metres above the previous record high?? That's what I mean about the EA automated predictions often being wrong.
  16. I agree. The automated EA predicted river levels are really often wrong.
  17. I went on a Hurtigruten cruise back in 1997. All the way from Bergen to the very north of Norway, nearly to Russia at Kirkeness and back to Bergen in 11 nights. It wasn't a proper "cruise", more of a glorified ferry. The food was nice though. It stopped at many towns and villages on the way to deliver the mail as well as stopping at the major places (Trondhiem, Tromso, Hammerfest etc.) for a few hours. They would announce the exact time they were going to cross open sea between fjords and islands and explain that today it might be a bit rough between 1600 and 1625 but the rest of the time sailing on fjords it was smooth. It was a most enjoyable holiday. I suspect it has gone a bit upmarket now.
  18. The pub at the Rawcliffe mooring has closed but there are still 14 day visitor moorings there. The Waterways Museum has closed and is now an auction centre. I think they have paid for moorings which include electric hook up. There are bankside moorings opposite these moorings on the north side of the navigation. People do leave boats there but we know of people who had their boat broken into there. Goole Boathouse Marina has changed hands and likes to call itself Goole Marina. They probably have short stay moorings available. Has a nice cafe and bar by all accounts. There are CRT 72 hour visitor moorings nearby. Viking Marina is probably still full but it's a nice friendly place. It's still good fun watching the ships come and go through Ocean Lock.
  19. Well.... If they had a mooring on the Thames they wouldn't need a CRT licence. Perhaps I'm missing some irony here or something.
  20. But Meadow Lane lock in Nottingham is shut from 30th October to 22nd December. So that is the sticking point. I think the OP is snookered unless Wigan opens soon (due by 27th October) and they can get through Bingley and Dowley Gap before the 6th November.
  21. Also it's on the Thames so won't be on the CRT list.
  22. The Nene Valley Railway at Wansford. The station is a short walk from the River Nene visitor mooring pontoon.
  23. Every time I go through the Bascote staircase on the GU (Ham Baker paddle gear) I try to work out how the disused side ponds would have worked. Every time I fail to work it out. This staircase has "proper" side ponds and is a "proper" staircase. I get how proper side ponds work as at Hanbury, Hanwell, Bosley etc. but Bascote always defeats me. Actually the side ponds at Hanwell are also confusing because they have three different levels.
