Fennel
Hello all I have what is probably a very simple question but I'd appreciate a pointer as I'm new to all this.... I bought a boat recently and amongst a long list of work which needs doing, I was recommended to put a valve in the hose leading from the water tank to the pump so that I can potentially switch off the water supply eg if I needed to repair the pump. Could anyone point me in the direction of such a valve? I've had a browse online but don't know exactly what it would be called so can't be sure I'm buying the right thing. The hose is 1" diameter although I think the fittings on tank and pump are only 3/4" as the hose has been fitted over other narrower slices of hose. Thanks for any answers and apologies if it's an obvious/much-repeated question!

Hairy Animal
I concur that a ball valve is what you need. There's a wide range of sizes (generally bsp threads) and options such as male-male, female-female or male-female so you need to look closely at your existing pipework to see what would fit best. Many suppliers sell ball valves, not just chandlers. Lots of choice on eBay and elsewhere.

dor
If you fit a lever ball valve, make sure it is "full Flow". Some have quite a restriced hole through the middle and are designed for high pressure systems. Lever ball valves are preferable to gate valves as they will cut of the flow completely, whilst gate valves have a tendency to leak. Also much quicker to turn on and off.
