  1. That is interesting as I could smell it the other day when I lit the hob, which is unusual at the start of a bottle...thanks again for your help, there's always something new to learn on the boats!
  2. Thanks, that's good to know! Aberrations in explosive fuel systems always make me nervous. I've employed my usual IT technique of turning it off and on again i.e. disconnect and reconnect the bottle, and the noise has gone. Which is somewhat reassuring. Would like to know why it suddenly occurred after four years but that will probably remain a mystery.
  3. Hi all, Hope this is in the right place. As of today, when I turn on the hot tap (heated via Paloma) the gas regulator makes this loud 'buzzing' noise (recorded in video below) which is audible at quite a distance from the boat. This doesn't occur when using the gas hobs or oven. I changed the gas bottle a few days ago, if that's relevant. Anyone heard this before? It's worrying me - I don't know if it's dangerous or not. Thanks MVI_0020.AVI
  4. not sure if this is a joke or not - but I did mean that the issues may or may not be connected, not the cables themselves I will investigate all of these suggestions, thankyou. It doesn't happen in neutral but when I start the engine it seems to struggle immensely until I up the revs a bit, this was definitely initiated by the replacement of the throttle cable as it was fine before that. Did I mention the time I accidentally drained the entire water tank into the bedroom, or the time the paloma exploded ? Or when I lifted the lino in the bathroom to reveal the UK's premier fungus collection
  5. That's really helpful, thankyou I'll have a look at all of these things tomorrow. Still getting used to owning an engine and just as I feel like I'm on top of one problem, another turns up!
  6. Ta Until today I didn't know there was any kind of name for what it was doing! Fuel filter was changed a few months ago, not really possible to see what was in it, I did the water trap last month and there was almost no water in it. I sucked a certain amount of stuff out of the bottom of the fuel tank last summer and it was filthy and full of large chunks of 'matter'. Maybe time to do it again/get someone to filter the whole lot?? To the best of my knowledge, before I bought the boat it was left idle for three years with a half empty fuel tank .... thanks Tony
  7. The crowdfunding aspect is that you're pre-ordering a copy - so you get your 'donation' back in the form of a book
  8. My engine has been hunting (think that's what it's called? the revs fluctuating whilst cruising) for a while now, probably since last autumn. I had a lot of problems around that time both with the injectors and the throttle cable, which may or may not be connected....? Anyway I've been reading up on it and my question is: how much of a problem is it? Does it damage the engine/reduce performance or is it only a problem in that it sounds horrible? In case it's relevant - it's a Nanni 2.50 HE, 14hp, built 1998 Thanks
  9. well exactly :/ I'm amazed that for such a famous site it's attracted so little funding
  10. Not sure if I'm allowed to post this but I guess I'll soon find out.... I've just seen that Tooley's are trying to crowdfund a book about the history of the yard, it doesn't seem to be attracting much interest though....anyone care to donate/share? It seems a shame not to have a proper record of such an important place https://www.gofundme.com/scxxt-book-fund-raiser
  11. Thanks again everyone, I will investigate. And failing that I will get what I call "a proper person" in. Cheers
  12. thanks all I'll try to answer everyone's questions in turn: Mike the Boilerman I may have misunderstood exactly what the chap did - he mentioned he'd adjusted a microswitch and afterwards the water coming out of the tap was visibly more 'forceful' - up from about 9 psi to 18 when he measured it. The pump is a Shurflo, I can't check the model + location of switch until I get home but it's about 21 years old. My feeling is that the pump is probably worn out but I don't want to replace it until I understand what's happening with the day/night thing in case it doesn't help. System 4-50 they're charged only off the solar panel at the moment. They usually show 13v or more during the day and about 12.8 in the evening. I wondered if there was some kind of battery charge issue but I'd have thought using solar would mean it was better during the day :/ Re: lights, one of them is often very dim when I switch it on, the cure for this is to switch on the water pump then briefly open and close the tap. Roland Elsdon I'm not sure about the earthing - I inherited the wiring when I bought the boat and I'm still trying to make sense of it. I will put this on my list of boat mysteries. (It's a long list). Chewbacka cheers I'll try hanging a lantern in the tank over winter, maybe that will help
  13. The short question is - does anyone know why my water pump would operate at a higher pressure during the night? For context: for a long time my water pump has been operating at too low a pressure to trigger the Paloma. A chap adjusted the microswitch on the pump last week bringing it back up to its original pressure, it was fine for a few days, now it's rubbish during the day but high enough to trigger the Paloma from dusk onwards. I've tried operating it with and without other electrics (lights) running as I've had strange interactions between them before but no result. Not a massive problem as I just do all my showering and washing up at night but I would like to know why it happens :/
  14. Cheers folks, I will give some of these a try. I'm afraid I left off the make in case what I'd said about their dealer (there is only one) counted as libel/slander. Can never remember which of those is which. I know they're broken because I have someone here who is qualified to investigate such devices in a clean and safe manner. The plan was that he would repair it again afterwards but as it seems impossible to source new springs that idea has rather fallen by the wayside. Ta again
  15. My engine is out of action as both the springs in my injection pump have snapped - I need to find a reputable company to whom I can send the pump to have these replaced and probably the whole thing serviced in case there's anything else up with it. Can anyone make any recommendations? I have been in touch with the engine manufacturer's UK representatives and they've messed me about to the point where I don't trust them any more. Many thanks and as usual apologies if this is in the wrong place!
