mayalld
No. But it's still his right to ask for money and I do quite admire the fact he's raised £6,000 just by asking. And it is other people's right to suggest that his cause is not a worthy one.
cuthound
To bring this full circle, I wonder if MtB will create one to fund the engine repairs now required for Reginald?

Mike Todd
The £10000 isn't taxable, what would be taxable is any interest that he earned on it when he invested it. Same as when you inherit money - the dosh itself isn't taxable, but any interest that accrues is. Inheritance tax is different - it's on the estate of the deceased, not the receiver. Of course, sometimes you have to flog everything you inherited in order to pay it... You don't - the estate has to. In fact, probate, which releases the money, will not be granted until IHT has been paid (or some agreement reached regarding it). You just don't get your inheritance when you expected it, or even the amount - tough!
Lady Muck
Ok, I've just deleted another flamewar and locked the topic, my apologies to those who commented but weren't attacking, but the whole lot had to go. Can I just remind folk of this? http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=73106
