Mattress advice please?

Featured Posts

OK....at the risk of making an even bigger eejit of myself than usual, I am seeking advice!

We are hoping to have our prospective "new boat" surveyed within the next month (EEK!!!!) with a view to taking ownership after some alterations have been made( all being well of course!). One of the alterations is to change the existing double bed to a king size, thus avoiding threats of gbh etc between us both in the future ;-)

My question is.....will we have to have a mattress made in sections, if so where and what sort of cost? If not.....how the hell do we get one IN???! :-(

Apologies if this is an obvious one.....

Thanks

SAS :-))

If it's memory foam it will fold, (with some effort). If it's sprung it won't fold with damaging it unless you are very very lucky.

Oh my.....the mind boggles!!!! A wrestling match with mattress.....hmmm....next contender for Olympic sports?! :-(

Slats in my opinion is much better,it allows the Mattress/ Bed and Locker to breath better.

I Spent over £500 on a 3 Sectional 6 inch Thick By 6ft Wide By 6ft 6inch Long Memory Foam Bed Mattress, yes you read it right over £500, put it on a Solid Ply Base, Worst idea Ever. It SweatedTerribly. Had to Up end it and allow it to air Daily, Don't Do It..

Pocket Sprung would have been better, but not much.

Slats is the answer in my book anyway.

Choose right & Sleep well.

We got ours from the Edwardian Bedding Company -- edbed.com. It's brilliant -- not cheap -- but a really great mattress and I don't think expensive for what it is. And they are really helpful. They specialise in bespoke mattresses for boats. No connection, etc etc - just a happy customer.

Cheers " Whale", that's really helpful! :-)

We bought a standard 5" thick Latex mattress from a furniture shop, it comes rolled up with all the air squeezed out. Measured what size sections we needed, in our case three bits. Took it to the local upholsterers who chopped and covered it for us.The whole job was less that buying foam the from a specialist shop

Thanks Brian, but think I'll have to seek out something with bit more spring than foam! :-)

I went to a foam shop and had a piece made especially to the dimensions of my back cabin cross bed. I told them it was to be a mattress and they used a certain thickness of foam with a thinner layer on top. They stuck the two together and put it inside a sort of sock/cover designed to stop my bed clothes sticking to the foam.

It cost me almost £100 but is just as comfortable as the expensive spring mattress I have on my bed at work (yes I sleep at work!)

Cruising through Warwick today I noticed a sign on the back of a factory saying they custom-made mattresses for narrowboats. The Custom Futon Company or something similar.

Somebody here is bound to have also seen it and have noted the name and number properly, and will post it!

All I can say is that its as comfortable as our bed at home. Do not confuse foam and latex

Cheers Brian I'll certainly look at that!smile.png

Cheers Mike, but having actually sat on a futon for all of ten minutes I'll pass on your suggestion. I think the NHS could save a fortune using futons as an alternative anaesthetic for any ops to 'rear ends'laugh.png

You'd decline a custom made mattress because it was made by a company that also makes futons? ohmy.png

We struggled with the standard narrowboat solution of a 4' double bed - especially when it tucks under the gunnel. Luckily we have a rear engine room and the bed is just in front of this. I simply used some slide out boards to extend the bed width - I had to screw a bearer to the gangway side for them to rest on.

We then bought two 3' mattresses and have a huge 6' wide bed. Initially we thought we would pile up the bed every night, but to be honest, when we are boating with just the two of us - we simply leave it down.

You can get good quality 3' mattresses at very cheap price.

  • 1 month later...

SAS, if you really want to 'go to town' - get you mattress made in two sections by any 'bespoke' mattress manufacturer.

ViSpring make exceedingly good mattresses (Vispring) - (they are also exceedingly expensive)

OUCH! thanks G&F but tad too much for me!!!!
