The only bit you missed was he is by himself so no engine at the back, just the bow

I guessed he had no engine.

 

But the boat is small enough for him to swim ahead with a line between his teeth

Back on topic, I regularly haul my 22ft into /out of locks , I do as described earlier, one line on centre cleat on gunnels, on on pulpit rail at bow to steer it, the centre line tends to send the bow outwards a little, but that makes it easy to control.
