lpp2
Good Evening could anyone recommend a Narrowboat insurance company, preferably a specialist Narrowboat insurance, been on the internet, but I'd rather deal with someone who understands our needs. I'd be grateful for any recommendations. lpp2
Starcoaster
The main ones are Collidge and partners, Craftinsure, GJW, and one other that I forget.

Troyboy
My boat is insured with Navigators and General [ Canal and Riverboat Policy] via Nautical Insurance Services Limited , phone 01702 470811 . I've never had a claim so I don't know how good they are in that respect . There was a Safety Certificate advisory note a few years back regarding my gas fridge having an extended flue pipe to vent outside that got resolved in a common sense manner . No doubt knowing this Forum someone will now come along with an horrific experience with this company .

alan_fincher
OP: - I think the best 5 companies in the business have been recommended on the posts above. There are others, of course. I use Saga for the leisure boat, because (despite what some say), it had less obvious restrictions, and was cheapest. As I have never tried claiming though, I can't say if they are any better or any worse than the others in that respect.
LoneWolf
OP: - I think the best 5 companies in the business have been recommended on the posts above. mine wasn't actually a recommendation just a suggestion of the one Star had forgotten. I've never had to make a claim, which is the only thing worth recommending on imo

Odana
GJW used to put my premium up each year above the price that they'd charge a newbie, so every year I'd have to go through the palava of getting a 'new' quote, then phoning and challenging them -they would then immediately match it and drop the premium with no apology. Very tiresome and a reason not to go with them again - I hate that kind of all-too-common sharp practice. John had used Collidge & Partners for years and they had never done this - just a fair rise, if any. So guess who we went with when we consolidated and bought one new boat together? Extra new office boat is now insured with the Basic Boat Insurance Co - no idea how they are to deal with long term but they were very cheap for the third party liability I needed to prove for my licence etc and didn't require a survey of my 1968 patchwork boat! Towergate Mardon actually reduced our premium on renewal last year (or might have been the year before).
Starcoaster
mine wasn't actually a recommendation just a suggestion of the one Star had forgotten. Could be! I just knew there was a fourth one often mentioned, but had no idea which it was. I did my first year with GJW (lowest quote I got) but found the same as Odana on the renewal, so this year I am with Craftinsure, who beat the price I paid to GJW for year one (with no claims made) rather than making it higher! sassan
I've never made a claim, so can't comment on that. I applied to towergate mardon and they were an absolute nightmare to deal with, wanted every tiny thing mentioned in the survey dealt with (even things that the surveyor stated in the survey weren't a safety issue, or could be dealt with at the next slipping in two years, etc). Eventually said screw them and went with craftinsure, who were cheap and very easy to deal with, answered my questions fast, etc.

They never even asked to see my survey, and they're fine to deal with at renewal - they've never tried the large premium increase trick & it did go down one year
Starcoaster
Lots of insurers ask for a survey when a boat reaches 25 (or 20 for some companies) for fully comp. GJW did with my boat (25 years old). You can get third party only without a survey though from most of them I think.
PaddingtonBear
What you have to ask is how often is a narrowboat good nick ever going to be a total loss? in my view it is almost never so why not have third party basic boat insurance and save yourself all the grief. Got the steer off Carl so it must be right
roggie
We use TowerGate - they just sent out details about claiming about £10 if you refer someone to them. Yes they wanted a copy of BSS and survey (1988 boat) but seem pretty easy to deal with - and take money quite quicky. Oh also send a £10 voucher for IWA membership. Glynn
We have just renewed with Haven Knox Johnston, at about £220 all in , they seem a very proffesional company that specialise in marine insurance only.
jelunga
I can highly recommend Navjgators and General, going direct to their Brighton office. Settled my stolen bicycle claim paying out more than I expected. Excellent service.
