they sent a helicopter from Anglesey! Were there none closer than that?

If IRC there are only 6 RAF air sea rescue bases

Lossiemouth Scotland

Boulmer NE ENgland

Valley Wales

Wattisham Suffolk

Chivenor Devon

Which would be the nearest?

Fleet air arm and coastguard bases are all further away.

Just because the aircraft was BASED at RAF Anglesey, it may not have come FROM there for this rescue. It could have been on another job closer by thanany of the other bases, it could have been 'passing', it could have been that other SAR Seakings were busy.

The point I was trying to make is that there is no base near the incident and Valley could be the nearest (I haven't checked the distances).

Just to prove I'm awake; that's five, which one is missing?

Valley to Sawley is about an hour by Sea-King (they are a bit slow!) but not sure whether that is considered too long? This country has air ambulances inland, but they are not winch-capable. The SAR assets are generally around the coast because their prime job is getting people out of the sea / boats. One can normally land an air ambulance for inland rescues, just not in this case!
