Where to get paint from and what paint?

Featured Posts

Hi,

Am after enough paint to do our shell and was wondering where could be good to get it from.

The local chandlers only sells it in 750ml tins and it aint cheap.

Ideally I need 5l grey primer and 5l grey satin paint.

Obviously paint is heavy so if I bought online there would be a hefty postage cost but figured it may be better to buy in 5l tins from somewhere.

Any recommendations on where and what paint.

Am not after a super shiny finish, just a basic couple of good coats will do me fine.

Cheers

Frank

If you are looking to avoid carriage costs, (or a lot of driving), you probably need to give some clues where you are.

Uxbridge Boat Centre do either silver or red oxide style primers in unbranded tins, including 5 litres, at far lower cost than some of the standard branded primers. (Many on here like Uxbridge - one of the better chandlers, run by people who know what they are doing).

Not sure about the use of a satin finish though, if that's to be your topcoat. Use a deck-paint, possibly, but a lot of those ain't particularly cheap.

If you only give it "a couple of good coats", don't be surprised if you have the sandpaper and paintbrush out again a lot sooner than others who put more coats on, though! That's not a lot of protection!

The shell will be primed with a holding coat so just want to put on a couple of coats of undercoat and then a couple of good coats of topcoat, hence dont need primer, just undercoat and topcoat.

Was told I coujld maybe get a gloss grey topcoat and add some matting agent, but this sounds fiddly,as if I ever want to touch it up, I may not get the same mix again.

Based in Derbyshire (Buxton area) for time being and shell being built in Nantwich.

Just basically want to get a few coats on before it comes out of the workshop.

Probably worth getting the question straight in the first place then, before you ask it!

We used Rapidpaint in Birmingham who do a Narrowboat Paint line here. Very helpful, offer plenty of advice as well as large cans of paint. Trade counter on site or you can have it delivered.

To be honest though if it's just holding coats and you're going to be re-finishing before the final proper coats I'd have thought any suitable mainstream undercoat and topcoat would do. We used a Wickes topcoat on ours as a holding coat.

If you're trying to keep costs down International 10 Year Gloss or Dulux Weathershield might be worth considering as your topcoat. They are both flexible paints and are roughly half the price of most specialist boat paints. In my experience (unless perhaps you use a two-part epoxy topcoat), any paint will suffer from scratches and chips so I can't really see the point of paying for boat paint.

I did the gunnels with International Ten Year after reading another post by yourself (I think it was you) some time ago. I added a drop of Owatrol and it went on great, having lasted as well as anay of the "marine" paint that I have used. The cabin will get done with same as soon as the weather is warmer.

I haven't used Owatrol before. Is it this stuff you used?

That's the one. Adding just a drop makes the paint flow so much better and keeps it wet a little longer. I am not the best painter in the world, but using ten year International, a drop of Owatrol, and a decent Harris brush even I can get a reasonable result :)

Owatrol can be used on rust spots in its raw state prior to painting too. I have never tried it as a wood finish though.

Cheers, I'll try it when it when I paint next time.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Am looking at the International 10yr gloss at the moment.

I seem to be having a bit of a time finding decent undercoat though. Correct me if Im wrong but I figured I would need a couple of coats primer, a couple of standard undercoat and then 2 or 3 using a gloss topcoat.

What has everyone used for undercoat?

Thanks again

Frank

I'd have to double check this, but I am 99% that B&Q sell the correct undercoat by International, and that was what I used.
