Thankyou British Waterways for making the towpath on the Paddington arm nice and level, oh, and also smooth. Now the cyclists can have races!!! and also its attracted little gits on mini motorbikes!!! Did you contemplate that would happen when you were spending my hard earned license money?

The towpath round Chester isn't always flat but there are still gits on mini motorbikes. I think BW should set up a reporting process, as in my experience the motorbikers use the towpath at roughly the same time on roughly the same days, and they should get fined! Bloomin' dangerous.

Disgusting, let have them all overgrown and rutted, negotiable only but those shod in hobnail boots and sporting silly beards. That'll teach 'em.

It's not only BW. When I was going through Sale on the Bridgewater recently, work was progressing on the much heralded Bridgewater Way walking and cycling path and I noticed a nicely tarmacced (how do you spell that?) and sloped access path from a bridge which looked ideal for skateboarding straight into the cut. They will probably put some railings up when it's finished; hopefully.

Public called into canal towpath dispute

The canal footpath, off Durn St, Littleborough.

A public consultation into plans to resurface the canal towpath from Littleborough to Warland is to take place on Saturday.

The proposals caused controversy when they were first announced, with walkers complaining about the materials being put forward being unsuitable for the countryside.

Canal users will have the chance to have their say when various options for the path will be displayed on Saturday from 10am to noon at The Summit pub, Todmorden Road, Summit.

Funding for resurfacing came from the South Pennines European rural funds and Connect2's Big Lottery funding, after the council was one of 79 projects in the UK to win a slice of £50m funding to improve pathways following a national TV vote in 2007.

Councillor Wera Hobhouse, chairman of Rochdale Borough Council's Connect2 steering group said: “I really do encourage people to get involved in our Connect2 project.

“It's much more than just getting from A to B in a sustainable and healthy way, but it's about connecting and engaging people with their local environment too - in ways that have never been possible before now.

“Come and have your say in this piece of the Connect2 jigsaw. It's something that's happening in your community and we want you to shape outcomes.”

Has the Paddington Arm towpath ever been anything other that wide and level?

Also if I recall correctly it was the Central Electrcity Gernerating Board who made it even better when they put the 132Kv cables under part of it.

This post appears to be BW bashing for the sake of it.

Natural selection surely - why waste money on 'stupid people' barriers

Precisely so !

This has always been a potential race track for cyclists, for many years.

As you say the Electricity board people are largely responsible for it being so well surfaced, and there is little evidence of BW wasting licence money on it in recent years.

Don't forget it was wide enough for two mini barge-pulling tractors to pass comfortably when in commercial use.

I'm always happy to bash BW for real reasons, but this is a strange rant.

The Muppet is you, the Paddington arm and Regents Canal towpaths have always been level, and the only expenditure recently has been to control bikes and has come from Transport For London...
