Does any one know if this a first, or do other schemes already exist on the system?

Canal Watch scheme meeting to be held in Staffordshire.

May 4 2010 by Justine Halifax, Birmingham Mail

A SCHEME to help keep canal walkers and narrowboat enthusiasts safe is to be launched in Staffordshire.

Staffordshire Police and British Waterways will join forces to hold a Canal Watch meeting at Brewood Fire Station, in Brewood, near Stafford, tomorrow at 7.30pm.

It will be open to all those who live or work on canals and enthusiasts of the scheme, which will cover the canal network across the Watling Street police force area.

Canal Watch will see crime hot spots regularly patrolled and a link system, similar to Neighbourhood Watch, set up.

Interesting, we were in Stone (Staffs) yesterday and saw plod walking along the towpath as follows;

1 police-woman

then 2 hrs later, 3 plod in a group, taking notes then another hour later, looked like different group of three plod later at dusk moving along a gathering of youngsters.

Thought there was a double murder or something! how often do you see 7 police patrolling these days.

Were they proper Police or Police support officers? I would have thought a place like Stone would have had a job to put out 7 coppers.
