It's a rather solid made rivited steel box, which I use on my front deck to hold my coal. It's about 2'6" by 18" by 20" high. The lid has 8 substantial places where it would have been clamped down tight, clamps are missing, and a seal to make it presumably air tight or water tight. It has feet to fix to floor.

On the hinges is stamped I.O.W and a stamp on the side reads TESTED 25-10-18.

My mum jokes that it was used to hold mustard gas  ..

Anyone any idea what it was made to hold??

It's a Mk1 heavy duty cassette toilet. They were built to replace chamber pots which were too fragile for miltary use. It should be painted dark green and it's a fine example so you should return it to it's original use.

In this case you'll need to resite it inside the boat unless you are tough and very confident.

That's the best suggestion thus far.. I don't understand the olympic idea

I should point out that I bought 2 of these, the other says tested 18-10-18, bet that doesn't help anyone..

Incendiary Ordnance Water ?

They look like flare lockers. or ready use ammo containers, as suggested.

Tested to withstand blast & heat, should something go off inside. (i reckon).

Possibly. I have seen pyrotechnic lockers with similar "fastening" arrangements, but not sure about the inverted "T" shape of the box.

Edited to add: W for watertight?

About £200 by the look of it.

Do you think its a modern item?

There are numbers on it suggesting dates and that it might be from 1918.

or do you mean £200 in 1918 money? That'd be about £7,000 now...

I bought 2 of them at an auction for 26 pounds.

Exterior-wise it looks a little like these flare lockers:

success!

That does look like it, only mine is obviously older.. Nothing inside mine though. I wish I had the nice brass clamps like the one you show.

Well now you have got it opened up!. The navy and army use such enclosures for auxiliary equipment and emergency gear, waterproof and fireproof not regularly used but must be to hand..

I used to supply similar bit of kit for hand signalling projectors it contained the thing itself, all the accessories and spare parts required and was permanently wired to keep the batteries charged.
