I suppose this is general!

I recall when we were cycling on one of the ponds in Bushy park back in the late 80s and one of our lurchers fell through the ice. Got the bikes back to the side (carefully) and watched as the dog worked her way along breaking the ice until it was thick enough then pulled herself out and walked back to the side. No problems.

Dogs, at least healthy ones, do not need to be saved from ice when it breaks. May have been a different story if she had been a spaniel or lab but we never would have remotely considered such an inappropriate animal.

People have died trying to save dogs which have subsequently had no problems.
