Ah yes gray.  The car industry has a creative approach to this.🙂 

 

I was a regular visitor to military sites in a past life and used hire cars of various descriptions.  On arriving at one such establishment, I was booking in at the guardhouse and the guard was taking details.  Car type, reg no, etc. 

 

"Right sir; colour?"  I peer at the key fob. "It says here, Storm". "Right Sir, well thats not going on my form".  "BLOGGS! WOT COLOUR IS THAT CAR", "GRAY SIR", " Right sir, your car is now gray".

"No problem" says I, gray it is.  So off I toddled.

I know my place and his gun was bigger than mine.🙂

Thanks for posting the report,  an interesting read. The comment on page 5 about the upstream gate of the old lock needing considerable effort to set it in motion, confirms my own experience in the 1980's!

Another couple of photos of the steel lock. I must have taken them in 1971 or 1972 judging by the boat they were taken from (just enough of the bow creeping into each pic to identify it).
