Generator switching off

My Mastervolt Whisper 6000 (Mitsubishi L2E) has recently begun to stop running after an hour or so. I think it might be over heating. I tried running it without cocoon and checked water pump belt is OK. I wonder if the exhaust or oil heat sensors can "wear out" and trip early or if the engine water pump could be worn.

Is it raw water cooled?? Does it have a jabsco type cooling pump? If so I’ve found the rubber impellers can wear quickly. The vanes also break off and block various cooling passages.

I take it that you don't have the remote control option so you need to look at the digital diesel control which is located on the top of the wiring box.

Errors are indicated by neon lights next to the relevant connections. The genny will stop for many different reasons as it is designed to do in order to prevent catastrophic failure but the errors don't always tell the truth. Having lived with a Whisper 6 ultra for 17 years now there are still times when these situations are quite frustrating.

If the genny is indeed overheating it is most likely due to a problem with the raw water cooling side. Check the raw water pump impeller to see if it is intact first, if it is damaged then replace it, but also make sure you clear any broken off bits that will have travelled onwards. If you can't find any you will need to back flush the raw water system.

If the impeller is intact the problem could be the pump itself is worn out, I had to replace mine recently at a cost of £750 and there are no cheaper alternatives I'm afraid.

Thanks for the info. My Genny is a Whisper 6000 not a Whisper 6 Ultra, so no error display panel. Cooled via a skin tank, not raw water. I replaced the alternator coolant pump impeller (Johnson). The engine coolant pump runs in line, on the same shaft. Is the impeller also  "MC97"rubber and is that what you replaced?

I have the same engine in my generator mine did similar turns out it was a relay issue which was triggering the stop solenoid

On my last Paguro 4000 generator I had issues with overheating on two seperate occasions. On one occasion it was down to a component issue  within the control panel. (never did get that one fully resolved) .Another time it was a worn Johnson raw water pump. Note , not the impellor but the backplate within the pump. Replaced both the frontplate and backplate and everything was fine. It's like a dream but the backplate MAY be reversible.

Thanks, I’ll look into that.
