And as it was (wiki)

"On 25 October 1960, in thick fog and a strong tide, two barges (named the Arkendale H and Wastdale H) which had overshot Sharpness Dock, collided with one of the columns of the bridge after being carried upstream. Two bridge spans collapsed into the river. As they fell, parts of the structure hit the barges causing the fuel oil and petroleum they were carrying to catch fire. Five people died in the incident."

Today in 2009 Nice mooring in Belleville opposite the cooling towers for the nuclear power station. All power and water was free and the tourist lady said that when they built the power station the town was given free electricity.

When we moored there overnight once we were talking to a Dutchman on a cruiser who told us that the reason he and his friends always stopped there was that if you went on a tour of the power station you got a free cup of tea! The Scots have nothing on the Dutch.    ?

Today boating in the upside down part of the world two days short of shortest day.

After a serously wild start to the day with intense rain and wind, and even a fatal toranado 20k south we went yacht racing. Tee shirt weather. Some of the waterside pubs were absolutely heaving this morning at 10am.

Evidently there was a game of football going on up north on wrong side of world.

Here it was tee shirt weather for most out on our harbour yacht racing.

When we got back alongside, about 4pm the portside partying was really pumping with bathing costumes? in evidence.
