Ghent, canalised rivers. Further down the Ghent-Terneuzen canal is 200 metres wide and 32 kilometers (20 mi) long, capable of accommodating ships of up to 125 000 gross tonnage. The largest permitted vessel size has increased, correspondingly, to 265 metres long x 34 metres wide, with a draught of up to 12.5 metres.

Unusual manoeuvre of nb Gordon Bennett there. Looks like they came into the “basin” , then turned 90 degrees and moored up. Presumably they intended to head back up the Coventry the next day?

However when just about to nudge the bank  the steerer is steering the opposite way to expected when looking at the final mooring position in the second picture?

Would they have incurred a toll in days gone by entering the basin  or was the toll collection from the lock?

Aha. A bit of artistic licence there in the order of the pictures. ... It was a misty morning, and, for us,  a passing-visit by car, so pleasing to find a boat moving. It was basically a wind, from mooring overnight in front of the Greyhound and returning along the Oxford.

In chronologibal order, then- the mooring convenient-for-t'pub

All went smoothly enough. We all do manoeuvers for our own boat with the resources available. I enjoy fiddling with ropes-and-no-engine, and wondered at the time whether a long rope from the front could be walked across the bridge, leaving the backend on the bank: better with another person to assist with pulling the stern towards the corner ... even so might have stuck on the mud ...
