  1. I would agree with david, first find out the cause of loss of compression because without that information there is no way of knowing whether option one is even possible (let alone affordable). any more info would help... has it been a gradual change (getting harder and harder to start of a long time) or sudden change (loud bang and then would't restart). how did the engine seem when last run, how is the oil (has it got water in it, is there enough oil) when you try and start it is there any sign of life at all (any smoke from exhaust, any pops). can you hear the starter turning through compression or does it just whirr smoothly with no change in pitch. does the engine rattle or clank when turned over.
  2. the site is built using the bootstrap framework and the reason people are seeing different views of the site is because it adjusts itself according to screen size / portrait / landscape etc. I have attached a couple of screencaps of it at different sizes.
  3. for the system to be able to update the loggers screen it would need access back to the main database, however there are data sims available (at a cost) which will use any available network and are not tied to a particular one, using one of these would vastly improve the chances of getting a data signal. We often seem to disagree Tony. unfortunately by the pair of us (presumably) having a license we have agreed to certain conditions attached to that license, the main part of the problem seems to be CRT's system for checking that boaters are staying within the conditions agreed. Their current system is clearly producing too many false positives which is leading to what you describe as harrassment and intimidation because of their trust in a flawed logging system.
  4. assumptions are dangerous things. just because a logger has previously done his route every other Wednesday doesn't mean that he (or another logger) isn't going to do it on a monday in the middle, as long as the gap between them is less than 14 days then it keeps their data valid
  5. as a coder if I built a system that made assumptions like crt's system I would lose contracts almost instantly. having meddled a bit with location aware systems on smartphones etc and having good knowledge of database systems I could probably build something up that would update as a logger was walking giving them a display of boats currently recorded as being within x (say 10) metres of their current position with a button to press only if the boat is still there and a separate function to record a new boat in that location. any boat not having the button pressed would then be recorded as being in an unknown location. the only places I can see where this system would not work well would be places where 2 sections of the canal run in close proximity (like sutton stop) or areas alongside marinas
  6. It seems to me that the CRT logging system needs an additional 2 entries from the loggers. 1. starting to log kilometre abc123 * Log boat 1 * Log boat 2 * Log boat 3 * Log boat 4 * Log boat 5 * Log boat 6 * Log boat 7 2. finished logging kilometre abc123, any boats previously logged in abc123 and not logged this time are now in "Unknown location" Surely this small change would cure the problems found with the current logging system.
  7. try www.raintoday.co.uk we use it heavily for one of our businesses and find it to be accurate (the free version shows you what has happened over the last 3 hours or so, the premium version goes into prediction for the following 3 hours)
  8. sounds like an alternator problem as the tacho / rev counter will be driven by an output from that check all your connections to the alternator carefully, the chirp you are hearing is probably to warn you that it's not charging

  10. I was on the move yesterday morning (only between Brinklow marina and rose narrowboats) but I didn't see a single boat on the move. My boat is out of the water now for a couple of weeks (blacking and a couple of other minor bits), getting it done during silly season since I cant use the boat then anyway. Now I've looked over the boat out of the water I am pleased to say my initial judgement when buying without a survey was right, apart from one tiny bit of pitting on the waterline (spotted before purchase) the hull is in very good condition (actually better than I thought it would be)
  11. Fridge left on will take my batteries down in 8-10 hours, supposedly 3 x 110A batteries (although I suspect that in their current condition there should be a decimal point in there). I generally turn the fridge off as I go to bed and fire it up again in the morning before opening the door on it. new batteries will be going on my boat in Sept (3 x exide 115a) along with 120w of solar.

  13. I though that the way the forum topics lined up was mirroring my thoughts quite well.
  14. what appears to be a tarp over the rear covering where the engine etc would make me think that someone intended to put a new superstructure on it

  17. one rule with external cctv cameras always position a camera where it can be seen with another camera (makes it a lot harder to disable a camera without being seen) I have cctv around my home here, external cameras are passive (in that they just record to HD) certain internal ones will trigger uploading of 30 fps video to a remote server under my control, if you trigger one of those you have 3 seconds to use one of 2 options to stop the videos being uploaded. Option 1 : find and disable the camera box (Good luck, it involves lifting carpets and floorboards) Option 2 : cut 2 independent internet connections, then find and disable 2 3g backup connections
  18. yes it's geared up for mobiles with gps enabled. when I try it from a fixed computer using google chrome it decides I'm in the middle of kensington park in london
  19. I'm no singer so it has to be electronic reproductions for me Faithless - Salva Mea (the original full length version not the radio edit or anything else) closely followed by Insomnia (Moody Mix) or God is a DJ (Yes He Is) tunnels add some very interesting reverb and resonance
  20. It has actually just been improved.... it now finds the three nearest postcodes and shows them on the map in relation to your position.
  21. on the subject of additives I remember using a product called Batt-Aid tablets, they came in a tube like steradent and you added one tablet per cell, they were useful for getting an extra year or two out of a tired car battery

  23. this was my first thought too, plenty of people live under bridges (always have and probably always will), canals and rivers just happen to have a lot of bridges. Seems that the only unique thing about this story is that the bbc have noticed that some of them are migrants. I wonder if the story has been put out now to try and discourage some of our friends in Calais from joining us
