  1. Whatever he told you about me is lies
  2. My good friend Big Jimmy is the current and proud owner of Kyle. He absolutely loves it There's a bit of work to do especially on the electrics but he's working his way through it. Apparently it was up for sale for some considerable time and I believe he got it for a very attractive price. If you're still on the Rochdale I'm sure he would like to chat especially if you know something of Kyle's history.
  3. A local manager told our club secretary that providing winter weather doesn't disrupt the current ongoing works there's a possibility of assisted passage before the end of April. Good news for you, brilliant news for us on the Calder Navigation. Ironically this and the Rochdale stoppages couldn't have come at a better time for not going cruising and hopefully 2021 will be remembered for vaccine and Figure of Three re-opening.
  4. So after thousands of years of scientific research these people come to the conclusion that wood smoke is bad for you. Hmmmm could've saved them a lot of time if only they had asked.
  5. Me? I'm hiding in the cellar - the Foxes are cruising in a tier 3 area.
  6. ... so tell me why are you troubled by the Foxes haven't you got a cellar?
  7. Shock, horror boaters go cruising in tier 3 area. Thanks for the warning I'll hide in the cellar for the next 3 years.
  8. The big advantage of having staff is general maintenance i.e. fixing it before it's completely broken. That can also have a big cost advantage. Take Toddbrook as an example. How much did CaRT save by making the reservoir keeper redundant and selling the house as opposed to the cost they now face. Similar at Watford Locks spotting the problem and fixing it before it was completely broken would have enabled the navigation to remain open. Oh hang on that would have been to the advantage of boaters - a low priority with CaRT.
  9. Depends how the panels are fitted. Height is not the main issue it's how close to the edges of the roof. I had a GPS aerial which was about 9" high but as it was in the centre of the roof it wasn't a problem. Do your solar panels swivel and can be lowered? You can check the dimensions before going. Having said that a local CaRT manager told us if there's no major holdups over the winter Figure of Three may be open to assisted passage by late April.
  10. I think I may have mentioned this previously. I was told by a local marina owner that when water is pouring over the top gates to open all the paddles. Can't figure out why but it does work. After hearing that we have never really struggled with any of the nine locks although some are naturally rather heavy.
  11. I've done the Rochdale 9 about a dozen times never had any issues with locks or knob-heads. Although several years ago when you could climb up the wall alongside the Gay Bar and walk up to the next lock I was approached by a big Geordie fella who said "Have you seen this lot they're aaaall gays like" then continued with "What would yee do if one tapped yee up like?" When I explained I would probably crack the purveyor of a hands on approach around the head with the windlass I was carrying he replied "See ya later bonny lad"
  12. Sounds like the contents dried out and a large chuck got stuck in the pipeline. What you are doing will move it, probably back into the tank where you may be able to rake it out. Is there an inspection hatch on the tank?
  13. Sorry I'm not getting this. The guy has been taking the p*ss for 4 years, drives his neighbours round the bend with anti-social behavior, running a genny whenever, has a boat that is basically a scrap claims moving it was the cause of it sinking and people here expect all of us to feel sorry for him and hope he gets a payday. I truly hope he gets exactly what he deserves.
  14. The Bingley staff are very experienced but you can still get bounced around as the paddles are so fierce. Barry didn't suffer fools and I think the new(ish) guys learned from him and of course they are often under pressure from boats waiting above and below.
  15. Yes spot on. I think their constant moaning is all part of their perverse idea on how to sensationalise what would otherwise be a pretty boring vlog. I suspect they have had some short-lived interest from forum users since this thread started. That leak at Bingley is fairly standard and it's a bit inconvenient coming down yet I've not seen any scathing comments from other boaters. Wigan is a pain but not with a big crew and water gushing down the by-washes. Other long flights are hard work, try the Huddersfield single-handed. I wonder if their so called 'disasters' cause concern to less experienced boaters who may be influenced to avoid the Pennine waterways just because Michael and Jo can't deal with leaking gates on big locks.
  16. Yes definitely the best way to do Wigan flight. Just looked made me wince to see him exit a double lock with only one gate open oblivious to the damage that can cause to the gate mitres. Now who was it whinging about leaking gates?

I got a certificate for eating mine all up and the Lump Hammer was brilliant too. Shame it's gone was a great place to stop. Does anyone know why it closed when we were there - ages ago - there was a constant stream of buses bringing hen parties and stag do's so it looked to be thriving.
  18. Why not give Bingley 5-Rise a try? You may find that the top gates leak like they have for as long as I remember but you could make a blog to show it's really no big deal unless you are looking for a sensational title. BTW did they do a blog of themselves descending Wigan Flight I could do with something to cheer me up.
  19. Then who is the author, Claudia Trenhall and why does she think she speaks for the IWA if she is just a 'someone thinks'
  20. Not worth a new topic but this clears things up a bit https://www.narrowboatworld.com/12738-iwa-promotes-restorations "The association is not there for the boaters but for the good of the canals." P.S. How about restoring the Rochdale?
  21. Residents buy quayside property then complain about quayside - hmm does that ring a (church) bell?
  22. You need to read the thread and see the photo's of the 'damage' - could be a amphibious vehicle strike I suppose. I have had two reports from colleagues that suggest there's very little wrong especially compared with the state of some canal bridges boats pass under. And why close off the summit at lock 36 just before the winding hole? I don't understand who is responsible for what but I believe CaRT are responsible making a mountain out of a molehill. 'Mismanagement - the process of managing something badly or wrongly'
  23. I tend to agree with this and wonder if NABO are fighting the wrong fight. The bigger concern for me is will there be a system where you can cruise a small or big area and have confidence you can get back to your home moorings. In regard of the T&Cs, although I admit to not being very 'legal aware', Alan mentioned previously you have to look at the 'intent' which as far as I can see is to prevent boats with 'ghost' home moorings hogging the visitor mooring in a small area. To my mind CaRT can't manage the current CCer's use of visitor moorings in a small area so how will they do same for boat with a 'home' mooring. We have a very distinctive boat in our area which regularly overstays, sometimes for months, on visitor moorings in a very small area yet two club members with home moorings received CaRT overstay emails when in fact they were logged in the same 'place' on both the outward and return cruise to Rochdale summit.
