  1. Ours is only 2' 2" and we had no problems at all going to Llangollen basin. Whilst we were waiting at the narrows coming back there was a Hudson coming up that the owners said was 3' draught, it was going very slowly but it made it.
  2. That is my understanding too. the date is not relevant. When we enquired about a cheque book for our son when he went to uni that bank said they don't like giving students cheque books as landlords sometimes ask for post dated cheques for the years payments for rent, but as the bank does not care what the date is they can be presented any time, often causing issues.
  3. Could someone in the know elaborate on why there new regulations use "2 days" rather than "48 hours"? In Braunston (from memory) the stretch opposite the Boat House has been "48 hours, 14 days in winter" for sometime. What is different about this other than that additional constrain of 14 days per month, which presumably also continues over the winter?
  4. I do believe that the one that I bought 30 years ago is just like that too, and I think that was £40 as well.
  5. Your browser has a cache which stores most resources that are downloaded from the internet, and depending on the browser settings, and the settings that were provided with the resource it will use the file without checking if it is up-to-date, check if it is up-to-date only, or download it again. Some pages you do not want to be cached, a good example would be the "View New Content" page on here, you want it to go get that fresh each time, but others can just be retrieved from your browsers cache if you have been there before. It is not perfect though, and sometimes you get a cached copy when you do not, hence the ability of browsers to do "shift refresh" to force it to get everything again.
  6. Unless you are forcing it to the browser in not going to download the image more than once. Even it you reload the page it will just do a check (once) that the image is still up-to-date until the cached version of the file has expired. The site that is hosting the image can return expiry and no cache directives to force the browser not to cache the image, but why would a hosting site want to do that for static images. If you look at the http requests the first time you load the page you will see just one GET request for the image, which will result in a 200 (OK) response and the image will be downloaded. The other instances on the page will use that cached copy and you will see no other requests. If you do a reload on the page then you will see a GET request for the image which should get a 304 (Not Modified) response and the browser will use the cached version of the image. If you do a "shift reload" of the page then you will force the browser to download the image again, but as with the first time only once irrespective of how many times it is on the page. Usually in the business I am in the issue is with modern browsers being too aggressive at caching images and the like, as often what we return are not static and we want a new dynamically created one each time.
  7. Spon Lane Branch on this years BCN Challenge Just looking at the picture it is quite deceptive, yes there is an industrial building there, but could be lots of places more rural . Not until you look on Google Maps that you can see how (post) industrial this location is.
  8. Probably plastic bags in Netherton though. I overheated the engine (well I set the high temp alarm off at least) on the BCN Challenge 2 years ago, when the prop was fouled in Netherton tunnel and I was too competitive to slow down! Had a nice ball of plastic when I stopped to clear it.
  9. I was not aware that there had been a run in with the Navigation. We have been there a few times over the summer and it is doing well and the food and beer are good, but I guess they are wanting to go more for the Boot's market, shame they don't want to accommodate all, and as has been said, their loss. Without the Navigation on side Lapworth does not really work I would say. The idea of the Bridge at Napton, if is it still open and they want to play ball, seems a good one, but it is not good for accommodation for those with no boat. To allow people who want to attend both Gnosall and Napton by boat there would probably want to be 2 weeks between the events at least. Easter is very late next year and I think I am right in saying it is followed 2 weeks later by the May Bank Holiday, so perhaps that would be a good date for Napton? That would put it distinct from the post BCN Challenge timing that Lapworth has been, so perhaps a post BCN Challenge event on or close to the BCN would also work, Anglesey Basin anyone!
  10. We left at about 11, got into Calcutt just after 4 I think, it was still light at least. I have to say I was not convinced that it was not just leaves he had picked up, there seemed to be quite a lot in the tunnel.
  11. We also had a frustrating passage back through Braunston tunnel on Sunday morning. We followed another boat in, and noticed that he had no other lights on than his tunnel light so he was hard to see, and then the first boat we crossed with had a very smoky engine, and after passing him, I could not see the boat ahead at all, until I saw his tunnel band about a boat length in front of me, so I had to hit the brakes. He then went very slowly for the rest of the way, and we passed another 5 or so boats. When we eventually got out and shared Braunston locks with the boat ahead, it turned out he had picked something up on his prop and it took him some time to throw it off. Not a hire boat, and a reminder that there are reasons someone may be going slowly. I have to say that despite going so slowly and spending significant time in neutral, I would not have dreamed of attempting to pass him.
  12. Here is a pic http://imageshack.us/a/img28/695/v5tj.jpg
  13. We are now waiting at Braunston bottom lock, very busy this morning, lots of UCC hire oats going out for half term.
  14. We will be setting off from Calcutt tomorrow morning, but as I need to work during the day tomorrow (cough), we will probably stop near bridge 100 for the main part of the day, and then stop in Braunston Friday night, moving up to Norton Junction Saturday morning.
  15. Gayton is on the Grand Union, if you want to do the Oxford then why not hire from one of the hire bases around Napton/Braunston. The South Oxford has all the locks, so would probably be the way to choose.
  16. For gaming it is latency that matters more than bandwidth, a poor ping time will literally kill you in the likes of COD. I can not see what type of media that is available today that needs 40meg, and even with multiple users it still seems more than 99% need today. As you say it is more a case of people just thinking faster is better without really thinking about what they are going to do with the bandwidth.
  17. Perhaps you can, but what would you want to do with that sort of bandwidth, I don't think I would need to exploit it? To me latency improvements, and coverage, would be more important than bandwidth one you get to something like 10meg, or to be honest even on the 3meg or so I currently get from Three.
  18. Looks like we are on the breakfast list now, but missed off the dinner list. Sorry for being a late entrant and making it hard to keep track! Per my earlier post; Gammon with egg and pineapple & Steak and Ale Pie for dinner please.
  19. Bridge 102 is the one with the road to Flecknoe (Old Olive Bush pub), a popular mooring spot usually with boats both sides. It was by bridge 105 (the new one that is quite low) a few weeks ago, so may be moving in Braunston direction.
  20. Presumably still by bridge 102 then, it was there last weekend. I held back last weekend to let a hire boat through the bridge and past it, but no doubt be you can get 2 boats side by side past it but I would rather not try!
  21. Quite, when I saw the title, I thought Napton to Braunston, then is the logical "middle" of the Oxford to me.
  22. Thanks Richard, please ask Sue to put us down for 2 for breakfast. If help is needed for breakfast, Sally has volunteered, I will have a lie in. I don't know who is passing on the Saturday evening choices, but please put us (John & Sally, Firefly) down for Gammon with egg and pineapple, Steak and Ale Pie.
  23. We have had a change of plans, are are looking a make an appearance by boat. We would probably get there Saturday morning and leave Sunday lunchtime. So would be around for Saturday afternoon tea,Saturday evening, and breakfast on Sunday. So could someone fill me in on the current plans, is afternoon tea on, we (well Sally really) can do cake? Do we have to book meals for Saturday evening or can we just sort it out on the night? Is breakfast happening, what are the arrangements?
