  2. could this baptism on the bottom of the page be connected to the Margaret in this thread ?
  3. Hello Sgray Welcome , I have made several postings on this thread so you will be aware of my many connections to your Ward tree . it would be nice to exchange some details with you as you would know the complicated way the lines of the boating family's pass over time & again
  4. Thank you so much Pete I was unable to locate the 2009 posting. I have just ordered the 1979 magazine Alec winston's wife had a connected to the Nixon family so that may be why the photos where in the box & I have certificates listing some of my Nixon's being born on the Erewash. one was also a lockkeeper.I cant say 100% Nixon is the connection & will never know for sure as they have all gone now . the same as Stoulton spelt stalton on my dads brothers birth cert another family loose end with no one left to clarify. Ike Argent was also connected to the Boswells & Nixons
  5. In a box of stuff from a family member that has long passed I have these 2 x photos & have always wondered why they where in the box or if any connection there is no writing on the back as he could not read or write . I have seen these pictures elsewhere so there must have been a few in circulation .Could anyone shed some light on place ,date I have posted before with plenty of comments but nothing to pin the origin of pictures down
  6. Limestone was also loaded from Harefeild in a crushed form .A few years back a lot of the buildings used for crushing & loading still remained I don't know when the company stopped but they where there in 1934 when my grandparents & other family members worked the lime route .
  7. I was 3 years old when I had my first hangover I ate some dried fruit for the pheasants that had been soaked in beer . Another trick was for us children to be stood in the hold at night with pole & as the boat passed under the tree's the main light would be shone into the tree's this would stun the birds a bit like headlight do to rabbits & a quick bash with the pole they where knocked off their branch into the hold often killing them as they hit the boards .
  8. John was at Braunston this year but under the strick orders of the team to rest after his operations, but then had to go back in for a few days the stents will take a while to settle in but fingers crossed he is now on the mend .
  9. John Boswell has just returned home from Hospital again & is without internet connection till Friday but will come on here & answer questions then. Between us tonight we have had a laugh & a trip down memory lane & worked out these dates from memory His family where at Albert 2 or sometimes known as Boswells 2 depending on the family living there at the time. The Boswells ( John's Grandparent's) being there from late 1959 his Grandad died 1966 & granny Boswell stayed there till early 1968. Johns parent's did their last run to Croxley where they then had the Willow Wren motor taken away from them but where allowed to keep the butty this was moored for many years outside Cassio Lock near to our good friend Anthony who still lives in the cottage today They gave up the Butty for a house about 1969 john went to school in the area & a few years later moved to Long Buckby next to some of my Family to look after his Granny on his Mums side who needed care . Some of these dates are from memory but John said they years are correct .I will speak to Anthony later & make him aware of this Topic as he remembers all the cottages & History of the area
  10. Hello google Docks & Riverfronts of Hull this page has some great photo's & info that might help also try contacting Goole Museum Jeannette

My godparents Albert & sissy (Harrison) Sibley  trained Eli Gayford & I visited Eli on her Barge near to Chelsea Reach a few times with Aunt Sissy or Cissy as it is often printed

  13. This sign hangs above the dock but Tesco's deny all knowledge of the sign or the dock
  14. Visited Bulls Bridge Southall today & this is the state the remaining dry dock has been allowed to get into it was not so long ago that they (Tesco store built on site) agreed to maintain this area so as they could get planning for their Store
  15. Have located the sister Eliza with her husband job in 1851 & 61 census but up to now can find no records of any of the brothers or siblings in 1941 have located eliza birth & wedding & some of her Children . 1891 census Henry Allen is a lockie at Brentford Do you have the records of the several Whitehead family's from Tipton ? most who seem to have worked for J & S Roberts foundry in swan village. there seems to be a vast amount of them that emmigrated Interesting I have found a Clara Whitehead who married a Joseph Hale, joseph was my g granddad's brother on my nanny's boating family side Also a Hodgetts who married into my green connection.
  16. Jayvee To my Knowledge there where at least 3 non connected Whitehead boat family's. Do you know of any connections to the boating family's Allen , Hall or Hodgetts ? I have some Census for Whitehouse in the Tipton ,Dudley area but none match with the names you give . I also have a family tree for a line of Whitehouse from Tipton who end up in Pensilvania & Kentucky
  17. Alan your two pictures are very much like the couple of painted peices that i have in the attic & know for sure they are painted by my Uncle Joe . 1piece i brought at an auction & was identified by Joe as his work another brought at a canal festival where Joe pointed it out & said it was his work the third was given to my by David Bladgrove who told me it was uncle Joe's work . These pieces are not as good as the watering can or the water cans he done years ago for family , they are rushed quick painting done for sale to the public to earn pin money something he was not happy in doing & acc told them where to go when they expected him a born & breed boatman (His Words) to paint rose's on cat figures . My can was painted some 40 / 50 odd years later not rushed but painted with love & with the time of a person who had painted for most of his life. In my Ancesters remembered book I have some rose's & Castle sketches he drew for me they are so delicate it is hard to believe a man with hands the size of hams could do Your two show his trademark of large daisy's & is almost identical to the plate I have . you have more experience in identifying who painted what but to be total honest I myself would have been more convinced if it had no matter what colour large daisy's on the said mentioned water can .
  18. Never even seen this one & at Uxbridge just down the road from me The painting is very much like Uncle Joe's except for the fact there are no daisys a thing he always liked to add into his painting . The only time he would not have added daisys in is if he was asked not to . So could still be one of his Joe painted 2x cans many years ago for a boat one of his daughters had I believe she still has these, also a son in law has a boat with I think one of Joe's cans he used to post on here so with luck he may add some info . the picture is his old watering can that sprung a leak & he painted for me just before he went to visit the great cut in the sky. A great man who along with David Bladgrove inspired me to keep my canal family's research going
  19. Just googled the three horseshoe pub winkwell & it gives a pub on the canal there near a boat yard & some cottages I don't know the area but someone will
  20. I also wondered about the irish man part but then wondered if it was called this in josephs era or john sergeants . the entry on the census prior to the cottage is the Three Horseshoes so that might give a clue . Eli Oliffe was harder to find I believe I have him in the 1861 & 1891 census & he died weeks before the 1901 Census 1891 living in st Peters area of Berkhampstead born in Aylesbury living in George St married with 8 children occupation given as sweep/ coal merchant one of his sons is a sweep another a coal merchant . marine store dealer covers all sorts in the Census ie rag n bone man google describes this occupation as a person who buy's sell & sorts rags ,wood ect .I have even seen this to describle a bottle washer so wondering if the store was acc inside the coal yard I have been unable to find any mention of this. Eli also lived next to a pub the Rising Sun
  21. Joseph buck born approx. 1830 grew up in Hemel moved to the lock house Bovington in 1861 & married a canal girl then moved to winkwell lock about 1891 & became lock keeper this is the lock he drowned in locals & boatmen would often call the lock by the said lock keeper of the time . his post mrtum says drowned in his own lock x mas day 1898 suffocation by drowning with no evidence to show how he got into the water as it was xmas close with the lock being chained although he had spent the afternoon in the three horse shoes a few hundred yards away from his cottage . hope this helps
